Needless to say
When people say "needless to say", and (in my view) they just didn't need to say that, I sometimes say "needs must as needs does" to them and it throws them slightly because it's a bit tricky to discern exactly what it means, and when they Google it in quotation marks, they only get a couple of hits which makes them think it may have been a mistake but they can't be sure because it does have a familiar ring to it, by which time I think the very subtle reprimand - which I believed was needed - has both been delivered and has done its remediating work.
