Harold Camping was my favorite. His billboards and car decals <guaranteed> the end of the earth down the very hour (6pm local time in each time zone. No, I am not kidding.)
After that fell flat, he changed to a different date six months in the future. When that day didn't work, he announced he was going to study some more Bible verses for more clues.
This entire time he continued to take donations for his radio stations. One poor man spent over $100,000 USD of his retirement fund to buy advertising for this scam.
