I propose that we create a new forum called The Nursery where all the unruly children (who should be seen and not heard) would be restricted. They would be free to misspell their pointless five word posts and play with the smiley faces there without irritating the rest of us. The regular forums would thus be spared from their increasingly prolific mediocrity.
1. The "Chess Only" forum does VERY well in living up to its name. It is nearly devoid of inane and silly posts, and much good chess talk happens there.
2. The "Posers and Puzzles" forum has generated much good conversation for those brave enough to plumb its depths, and there is very little there that lacks intellectual meat.
Obviously, in view of those, it is possible to have forums free of ridiculous chatter. First, we must recognize that forums with a relatively focused intellectual scope tend to be light on silliness (it matters not what the focus is). I think, herefore, that the "inane post" problem is a problem of naming. Most of the foolishness occurs in the General forum, because of the "anything-goes" attitude. I would suggest renaming it "Conversation" or "Discourse", and seeing what happens.

I was merely trying to drive home the point (to some people who had failed to take some more subtle hints) that this is a forum and not a chat room.

There really isn't anything too wrong with the way the forums are set up. I can't see that excluding non-pawn stars would work - surely a 'spammer' who has paid out money would feel even more entitled to practice his or her spamming.
I don't think anyone is saying - "no more nonsense or sillyness in the general forum" - but it's all a matter of degree. It pretty obvious when someone is crossing the line into excess.
We really don't want to have to 'throw the baby out with the bath water' so let's just hope that now zach has promised to turn over a new leaf, others will follow.
