A really experienced musician can usually get a good sound out of even a crappy instrument.
Someone who is just starting out needs a decent instrument because they are already busy enough trying to learn without having to compensate for a crappy instrument. The learner can't even be expected to know how to compensate for an instrument that goes out of tune, for example.
When you start out, get the very best you can afford, something reliable. Later, you can have fun getting weirdness out of the el cheapos and not get frustrated.
Example: David Lindley can play a friggin shoe and make it sound great.

i have a friend who bought an american strat for £450 on ebay. it's used, and is being sent from america, but still less than £750...

mexican fenders are, i beleive, not so good quality as american but still sound rather nice etc. they won't appreciate in value anywhere near as much as an american, if at all...

although i would definatly reccomend an american fender. one of my friends has a tele, and it's awsome! so easy to play, and sounds so nice...it really is a pleasure to play...

there are lots of things to consider when buying musical instruments, wont even go into it here, the marshall DFX 15 watt thingy is a great little amp and doesnt have a bad tone for a little solid state amp (my brother used to have one), just lacks a bit of bottom end and it also allows people just starting out to get an better idea of effects, tone, etc...

also the size of the amp you want depends what you want use it for, if your just a bedroom guitarist and if your just starting out a small amp is ideal, when i started playing i got myself a 30 watt marshall solid state for only 130 quid, it had a great tone and was versatile enough for my first three to four years of playing.

Strats. Hmm I have a Japanese Squire Strat and I replaced the neck and bridge pickups with good after market ones. (Seymour Duncans, can't remember exactly what types because I just picked them up as trades over time) It sounds very good now.

EDIT: The guitar itself was fine before the pickup swap in the sense that the neck was good and it stayed in tune despite some violent yanking on the tremelo arm, it just sounded wimpy ...

You think I should upgrade my Pups then.. I got a fat strat.. HSS so for now might just replace the humbucker if that makes a nice difference i'll swap the singles over for some hot rails..
I seen loads of pups on ebay 🙂

Edit: oh yes my guitar also plays nice the neck is nice.. the tuners stay in tune.. but the termolo is a joke.. and I remove it.. cos it detunes my instrument too much after use..

I'd say if the guitar is otherwise fine, do it if you're not happy with the tone.

Its just I spoke to some guy on irc who was great guitar player really knew his stauff .. had great collection of guitars .. he said you'll swap erm over and it will still sound the same.. and he rekons was talking from experince..
But i dont mind spending £30-40 on humbucker to learn a lesson..

thing is i record direct into cubase then use guitarrig.. waves gtr.. amplitube.. and nomads roack amp.. which all sound WICKED with decent guitar. And read a simlar sort of thing on a guitar forum that changing he pickup wont make alot of difference.. but then one guy posted back that when u record into things like Pod thats where a big difference is made/heard.
