It would be nice one day to have a pope who didn't oppose the use of condoms to protect against Aids. Ah well.

The Church does not teach "Go forth and shag un-sheathed", but rather that sexual intercourse should be reserved for marriage. If the Church's teachings were followed in their entirity, then AIDS would not be an issue, so I feel that is a rather unfair criticism. As far as the pill goes, when the Church came out against the pill originally, against the contemporary advice, it was seen as a bad idea. Jump to 2005, and one notes the sexual act has been successfully separated from love and marriage, and that society as a whole is in decline. So who was right? Well, maybe skip forward another 100 years and then we'll see how things have gone. There was a good article on this in the paper here recently, which said it alot better that I might.

As far as being geriatrics, it does take a while to become Cardinal. Paedophiles? I sincerely doubt that. But one should point out that the Church throughout history has been a community of saints and sinners.
Also, if I may be so bold, I notice that the most staunch critics of the Church are rarely Catholics, or have been raised Catholic. It would be pure speculation to assume that this were the case with you, my friend. However, if you are part of one of those countless groups of Protestants, (I do notice you like to protest), then what does any of this have to do with you? I don't bother telling you the Rev. Ian the bigot Paisley is one of the most evil men in the modern world, or that in so many of your churches you had no need for priestesses, as your 'vicars' were clearly playing for the other side since long ago. That's your business, my friend, and good luck with it.

But why do the keep selecting old guys? They`d better start the process of selection pretty soon for his sucessor.
Popes, if you are ultramontanist, are the infallible representation of Jesus on Earth.
Like the divine right of kings they hold power until they die.
People are, generally, old when they die.
Hence the Pope is equated with being old, particularly with John Paul II whose final years were dragged out and decrepit. However, these images should not serve as an epitaph for a man, who in his day, was strong, vibrant, and possessed the courage of his convictions. If you see footage of JP II (as he liked me to call him) back in '78, you can see what I mean.
There was another question about fast tracking, actually the Roman Catholic Church (or RC as it likes me to call it) has been fast tracking for years, particularly from the developing countries (or the "Lets get those bums on a few seats dioceses" as nobody likes me calling them).
I would have been a Bishop today but I couldn't get involved in a sex scandal of sufficient magnitude.

A truth that is often conveniently forgotten by the opponents of the Roman-Catholic Church's teachings.
Originally posted by ivanhoeThat is true, but given that some people sin, why does the Roman Catholic church not want to give practical advice to sinners that is for the good of mankind?
