I understand you concern over the state of iraqi at the moment, but you must understand that it does take a long time to get things sorted in a country that has been run by such a dictators for 25 years. I am not trying to sterio type any one but i used to live in saudi arabia for 8 years and my father worked there with the saudi army and many of the troops (and the civilians) and they have a very layed back attitude towards work and often have the outlook that if they dont do it someone else will. so i cant imagine the iraqi people are helping the troops or themselves very much. My friend that is in the light dragoons division of the army is on his way there in 1 month, there is still daily shooting in iraqi so as you can imagine it is hard to try to build the country up when people are still destroying it. in the last couple of days a new iraqi government (or something of that nature) has been implemented into Basra, so hopefully this is the start of liberation for the iraqi freedom and REAL freedom for them. 🙂
Originally posted by NightWeaverOther way round actually. The US wanted to go in because of the weapons Saddam supposedly had, and everyone perked up with interested. But it slowly became apparent that all the US government had were suspicions, and were operating under a "better safe than sorry" type attitude.
i forgot to add that, as i remeber the allies went into iraq to free the people of saadams dictatorship, the WMD were just more ammunition for the war.
also i didnt read everyones post, so if i went over what other people have said ...sorry.
Of course the idea that you can attack a country because they might have weapons that they might try to use against you didn't go down too well, and it was at this point that the US realized it would have to go ahead with this war without the UN, and with another reason that at least SOME of the population would swallow. This is when they started playing on the genuine urge most people have to help people in need.
Some might say who cares why they did it if good comes of it? Besides the fact that anything that requires people to be tricked is dubious to begin with, I don't believe good WILL come of this in the long run. Iraq is still in a mess "Do you expect miracles overnight??". Afghanistan is in an even BIGGER mess "Afghanistan was in a mess before we got there!!". Osama Bin Laden is still frolicking about out there somewhere "But al-Qa'ida was severely disrupted!!". Car bombs blew up several buildings in Saudi Arabia "The Saudi government let it happen!!".
And perhaps next year...
Saudi Arabia is still in a mess "It was a mess before we got ther...hang on...have we done this before?"
There were far worse places in the world than Iraq, and I very much doubt the US or her allies are going to be too worried about helping them find their ‘liberation’ anytime in the near future.
ok well thank you for putting me right. i doubt they will evr attack saudi as this is where they get so much of there oil and for such cheap prices. and i agree fully that there are worse places in the world but it was because of the oil that they attacked iraqi.
anyway i believe iraqi will be a better place when this is all over but it is by no means goign to happen in days, months, and even years. i wouldnt be surprised if it took many many years. but however long it take surley a democracy is better than a dictatorship
Let's hope so. Unfortunately i think you'll find the US will always have a presence in post-war Iraq, under the pretext of stopping another Saddam seizing power, and in that environment it's hard to see democracy flourishing.
(incidently Saudi Arabia was just an example 😉. But once the American public is even half willing again there will be another war).
