OTB over the board
How many people play a lot of over the board chess
instead of just on line chess? I don’t get to play much
outside of here, but once in a while I do.
How many people own a good chess set and board?
Are the pieces wood or plastic? What size is the King?

I have a few sets ranging from a magnetic travel set with a 5mm king to a stone Celtic set with a 10cm king.
The set that gets the most use is my Star Wars one.

I don't have anyone to play OTB with, but I have a small glass set which I occasionally use to set up positions. I think I also still have a travel set at my parents' house in Berlin. I got it as a child, but can't remember to have used it (I learned the moves as a child, but didn't really get into playing).

The board is is only 5cm on a side.
It's really much too small for my chubby fingers, but great for my 8yo son.
Probably explains why he can beat me.
Or maybe I'm just crap.
I have a bunch of sets, but my favorite is a Rosewood and Boxwood set that is supposed to be a replica of the pieces used in the Fischer-Spaasky match in 1972. The king is 3 3/4 (I think), and I have a very nice 24" square board to go with it. Ordered the whole thing from USCF when I was a member...I think it was around $350 altogether.

i used to play otb at county level but it was doing my head in trying to analize and remember openings, so this quiet life of just look and play something is a lot less stress. But why does size matter?
have the same positions play the same and so on, but the larger ones
like larger screens make it easier to grasp what is going on, it seeems
to me anyway. I like sets where the King is between 3 and 5 inches
tall, 3.5 to 4 is a very nice size for the pieces too in my opinion.

sets like star wars, revolutionary war sets and so on. I don't think
I will ever own one of those, not even a Lord of the Rings set,
even if someone gave it to me I don't think it would ever get
setup in my home.
