PHENOMENAL
Nothing sets me off like this word. I absolutely hate it when used as a synonym for great or excellent.
It just sounds so... retarded. Sorry. That's the best word to describe it. It sounds retarded.
"Hey, how was that foot long, Phlabby?"
"Oh just phenomenal"
"Nice use of the word"
*Glass in the face*
I always notice when people use "conference" as a verb. Or liase (I'm not sure if I spelled this correctly, but on the other hand, I don't think it's a word, so how could it be spelled incorrectly?). Don't you mean that you are going to "confer"?
I also wonder about people who use "truly" often: "I truly believe that we can ........". When they don't work it into a sentence, I feel like asking them if they are not telling the truth.
I heard some other talking head on the news last month refer to females as "people of gender"
Perhaps people use cutsie words and/or phrases in an effort to sound less boreing. We see the same words over and over for a life time. The only thing i am irked by is the misuse of words. Foe example the phrase "theat person disrespected me". (disrespected)? The gutter english growing from the ghettos and spilling into mainstream America is often disgusting. Also the present craze for exotic sounding names (which I believe are created in the minds of the mothers) are ridiculous. As soon as one of these foreign sounding names are heard, that person is branded a ghetto resident. That seems rather unfair to the poor kid stuck with this misbegotten name that will probably influence their life (poorly), especially in the business fields.
There's a line somewhere in the body of Ezra Pound's work (not the dreadful cantos) focused specifically on (but not restricted to the
poet's antidotal function in the face of) the downward dialectic of language and its avoidance... "to purify the dialect of the tribe."
Ezra probably smiled from his successful worm farm upon noticing this thread, particularly the post just above which I meant to quote.
