Thank you once again sir, your advice has been welcome.
May my opponents place their fate in lady luck, whilst I place mine in probability.
Never bluff until you can tell the opposition starts to assume you never bluff.
Be more likely to fold the more people are still in the game. More people who haven't folded = more people who might beat you.
If you're a blind, try to fight a little bit harder. You've got something in the pot; defend it if you can. That is. be less likely to fold.
Ok - Don't bluff. Your opponents won't be good enough to understand a good bluff but will see right through a cr@p bluff. However - occasionaly giving the impression of bluffing after winning a hand without a showdown can't hurt.
Apart from the n/47 the main other thing to keep in mind is your position relative to the dealer. If you're last to play your hand is much stronger than it is if you are first to play. You need a good hand to bet - or even call early on. In a full table i'd throw anything other than AA, AKs, KK or QQ if I was first to play. I might keep JJ and J10s if the game was going well. However if you're last to play (extreme example here) and everyone has folded apart from the blinds it might be worth a bet on 67s for example. The hands you're against are basically random hands beacause they havent chosen to stay in the game - and whilst they're probably better than 67s they don't know that. If you have been playing tight they'll expect a bet only when you have a decent hand. Plus you never know - you might indeed have the best hand.
Are you playing limit, pot limit or no limit? This will hugely affect what hands are worth playing - you need to be more conservative in a limit game.
Well the first poker night was a great success and with all the help from you guys I managed to clean up and walk away with $180!!
The following worked:
I only betted when i had a really good hand for the first 15-20 rounds (no bluffs). By this time 3 of the 9 players had already lost all chips. At this stage I followed Dr Scribbles advice and either raised or folded after doing some quick probability calculations (the more you play the quicker you become at working these out). This worked so well because the one player who had been winning in the early stages of the game, was calling every raise I made regardless of their hand.
I didn't start bluffing until the blind stakes were getting really big (after 2 hours of gameplay and with only 4 of us left).
It was only a $20 stake table but lots of fun and hey if you make a profit it can't be bad.
Once again a huge thanks to the advice from those who posted.

I play TexasHold'em over at Ultimate Bet, well, pretty much a lot.
The thing is - play your cards. Also, don't be afraid to step away. No sense in putting good money after bad. Don't be afraid to fold a small blind.
I tell you, you can tell more from a player who isn't afraid to fold a blind. It shows they know what they're doing.
Also, if you go to Ultimate Bet - you can play for FREE and that's the easiest way to learn. No, its no the same as with real dough, people make bets they wouldn't if they were using real money, but it's a start.
A friend told me once - never stay in with anything less than a pair of sevens or high suited cards. That's a guidance.
Good luck. If you go to Ultimate Bet - look me up. I'm there with the same nick as here.
* Almost anything can be played if you're on the button (=dealer) unless you got a lot of raises in front of you. Position is a huge thing in HE, especially the no-limit variant.
* Learn to calculate your odds via outs (outs = the number of cards that can help you) on the spot. You don't need to be precise, a rough estimate will do. 10 outs, 1 card to come, pot-size bet:
10/46 < 1/2 = fold.
* If (you think) you have the best hand make people on a draw pay. Don't let someone hit you with a backdoor flush or gutshot straight because you got greedy and bet to little or nothing at all to keep people in. Make sure their pot-odds forces them to fold if the board looks scary.
* Don't defend your blinds at all costs--post-flop you'll be in a crappy position.
* Don't try to bluff a bad player, he *will* call you.
* If you take a bad beat (someone beats you against tremendous odds) from a bad player, don't fling insults over the table. Instead, be calm and compliment the player. Then he'll play against the odds again next time and you can win back your money. "Don't wisen up a sucker".
* Be civil.
I've been told that some of the poker websites put in computer players when there aren't enough people in the game.
I also have a friend who placed 3rd in a big National Texas Hold'em tournament and was telling me how much money he was making by playing on the internet. But a year later he admitted he was down $10 grand! So I figure it's a dangerous thing to play on the net.
Any of you that watched the WSOP this year will hopefully recognize my avatar as being the funniest thing ever. But seriously, I play a little too much poker. That is why I am not on here as much as usual. Jenn Harmon's section on limit HE is the best thing ever, besides all of David Sklansky's book. Anything by 2+2 Publishing is gold. Check out his book "Hold Em Poker" if you want to develop a great technical feel for the game, and then when you get up to some tougher games, "Hold Em Poker for Advanced Players" should be the best.

Play a lot over the table, but online I generally play at Pokerstars or Pacific. Anywhere else you recommend?
Originally posted by Svin1I would add Layoff the booze also - this can lead to irrational actions in this game.

I like the look of the ultimate bet site - I did spot this page though on which the link directly under the 'Problem Gambling' heading made me chuckle as it is one of the most inappropriate links on the world wide web. They must have a marketing genius to have got that link onto that page...

Originally posted by timebombtedThere is really no straight betting strategy in my opinion. Poker is a game of oponemts, and reading your opponents and making the right call is what poker is all about. You can read book that give you exact percentages of each hands winning potential, which is good to know, but mean nothing unless you have some idea of what your opponent has. I've won a few small tournies and play pretty much every weekend with up to twenty people here in Hilo. If I could give one strategy it is to not bet early...just wait and watch at first, try to determine what people's strategies are. Do they bet big on big hands or try to sucker people in? Things like this can save you the big loss and also let you know who you can ride the pot on. And in the early rounds blinds are low anyway, so your not really missing any action. I'll sometimes fold every hand for the first half hour just watching the other players before assuming my strategy and actually playing. One last strategy is never get too caught up in a rut. That is don't make it so someone can abserve you and make the same deductions that you are trying to make about other peole. You have to change your strategy when playing against better players. Hope this helps a bit. I'm a lot better at hold 'em than I am at chess. Peace. NN
Anyone familiar with Texas Hold Em Poker? I know the rules but it would nice if someone would reveal to me some tactics to help me along the way.......
