prince william is graduating today (yay!). so the queen is visiting st andrews (once again, yay!). it is also the madras colledge's (the main high school in st andrew) sports day.
however, as the queen is visiting they are not allowed to use a gun to start the races. this means that no records can be set. some people aren't happy. others, like me, are a tad confused about the damage a gun used for starting races could cause. and if the starting gun was replaced by a real one, well what's the chances? it's have to be a teacher, and they'd have to be a good shot, and willing to be arrested purely for killing the queen.
i suppose the bang might cause some problems, but bullets travel faster than the speed of sound. so if you've heard thee bang (usually) you're alright...

DUH
If they are so worried about an assasination attempt, they should just have their secret service guys (or whatever they're called) monitor the process. Or...I dunno...maybe THEY could be the ones to use the starting pistol.
Regardless, it's just silly how everything is being considered a weapon, nowadays. Like lighters....you can't take cig lighters on the friggin plane, anymore. Like what? I'm going to blow up the aircraft with my Bic? Grow up!
It is the age of paranoia and fear...the terrorists have already won.
Originally posted by Shanshu311the secret service people are everywhere. there was an undercover policeman in my hall last year, and when william was in hall the rooms below, above and on either side of his were vacant, and his floor was chock full of police men and students of, erm, a similar disposition as william (i.e. ya's)...

and have the terrorists won, really? if a bank installs bullet-proof glass, have the robbers won? people haven't stopped flying. these measures probably should have already been in place - after all, there were a lot of plane hijackings in the 70s. no, the terrorists haven't won - they've just made their enemies much more security conscious and thereby stronger, lost their training bases in Afghanistan and a lot of trained personnel, and had lots of their cash assets frozen. the skies are probably safer now than on 11 Sept 2001, and that's a good thing.

Master of Arts my ass. The whole "royal family" are lucky to have a brain cell between them. The only thing they are good at is wasting tax payers cash.
I happily give money to charities, heck I've even skydived to raise money for some charities. How come us kind people fork out so much cash to help people in need and the Royals just sit on their provebial fat arses gambling away. They must have millions stashed away, have you ever heard of Prince Charles or the Queen giving away cash to charities?! They've certainly got enough to do it! I can only assume they're above giving the peasantry their hard earned riches and think that just by showing their ugly faces at a few charity events that they are contributing to the welfare of the world! 😠
Guess I'll never get a frickin OBE! 😉

I just think that they should relax a bit, that's all.
Bullet-proof glass? Smart.
No starter pistols at a race? Silly.

I personally have a lot of respect for Philip often says what most people a thinking, though not terribly tactfully.

Originally posted by heldenI am simply suggesting you check out some details before you get on your high horse. We have a monarchy. Do they work hard, I believe so, do other people work just as hard and don't get all the trappings? Without a doubt - but who said life was fair. What are our alternative to a monarchy, how much do they cost the tax payer? How many tourist do republican head of states bring in?

I am sounding like an ardent Royalist which is a shock as I am not but I do feel everything should be looked at before statements such as "he was a beach bum" which are simply untrue are made.
Rant offically over🙄
