If we assume that our identities are inexorably infused with the sum of our experiences in life, would it be considered cheating if I travelled forward in time and had relations with 'future' wife?

No. I mean suppose I'm married now and I travel forward in time about five years. While there, I sleep with my wife but it's my wife now five years older. If I then return to the present, will I have cheated on 'present' wife?

Hang on here Flea, she's the "same" wife just older but if it excites you to think you've had an affair......go for it.

It depends on how you percieve time. Some would say that there are an infinate number of alternate universes, and to travel through 'time' would be to enter into another of these universes and interact with an almost identical but slightly different version of the people you know. So by using this theory you would have cheated.

Then again, if you go down the more traditional route of there being only one timeline which cannot be altered, then you are not cheating - otherwise you have already done so in our real universe, as your present wife was once a future wife.

A more interesting idea of this arguement would be this:
If you go back/forward in time and meet another version of yourself and have sex with them - would it be gay?

Well, no, it's not the excitement of having an affair. Tchex is on to what I'm talking about. If our identity is comprised of the sum of our experiences at any given moment in time, then am I a separate and distinct persona at any given moment in time?

If you believe that your identity is indeed made up of those experiences, at any given moment in time, then I suppose your thinking "may" be right........"if".

and when you'd catch yourself doing her while you were supposed to be on a business trip, would you kick your ass?

Dude, of all the shhhiiittt in the world there is to worry about, I wouldn't torment yourself over this scenario.

It's quite unlikely to reach fruition, and it's also very silly.

If you're going to cheat on your present wife why not go back in time and cheat on her when she was younger?

You travel forward in time and appear just outside the kitchen window. You look in, and your wife and you are just finishing up a meal. You know by routine that soon you will take out the garbage.

When you come outside, you knock you over the head with a log and go inside to do the deed with your future wife.

Next, you go back in time where you belong and wait 5 years.... on that very same evening taking out the trash you go out the back door and bonk yourself over the head from behind before he can bonk you.

You go in and do the deed.

"... and, forsaking all others, to be faithful only to him/her as long as you both shall live..."
No one thought about time travel when they wrote the wedding vows.

There isn't a single living organism on this planet's ass that I can kick, including my own.
