I don't know the whole story of why you should wait for the purchase. But only if you are very close to the release of a newer version of the type you want to buy, I would wait (but then again, the 'older' version will be a lot cheaper, that is of interest for a Dutchy like me of course...!).
A year is a long time to wait for a purchase, and it is a long time for me to welcome you on board of my clan of course!

Also, just because the new chipsets come out, doesn't mean that all macs everywhere are going to become obsolete over night. It will be years before that happens, especially outside of a corporate atmosphere.

I guess what I'm saying is.... get the mac already.
Why not buy a second hand iBook? Compared to the price it will not be a very big lost if the technology is really outdated soon (which it won't). Surely there can be second hands to be found of models released in the last few months, so still very up to date. The biggest difference will be some Mhz in speed and the basic memory capacity which is customizing anyway.

I have a brand new ibook and can confirm it has 1x firewire and 2x usb2 ports. The battery life is over 6 hours and it is fully wireless enabled. Just because Apple will use intel based chips it does not mean they will suddenly become Windows sluts or MicroSoft whores.
Apples whole marketing plan is built around their proprietry software and O/S so I do not think you have to worry about the front end of your laptop becoming out of date, a move to intel will rather just be a change of the internals of the laptop that you will not notice as a user to any large extent.
By the way, if anyone is copying I have seen Windows Vista and it is a direct copy of OSX with a copy of Firefox as the browser.
