- reduction and curtailment of the civil list including, for example, security costs for Harry and Meghan.
- full inheritance tax when King Charles dies
- corporation tax on all income from the estate including palaces, land and offshore assets
- mandatory full income tax for all members
- release of all tax records for public scrutiny

@divegeester
I too believe there is a lot of money that could be of better use - they still would be well off.

* Liquidate the bulk of the assets, including land, jewelry and other property and use the cash for the benefit of the British people. i.e., Infrastructure improvements, healthcare, clean energy production.
* Mandate the Royal family members get real jobs. Most of them are well educated, and could serve Britian better as solicitors, members of Commons, or in the business community.
* Release of all tax records for public scrutiny.
Sorry if his sounds a bit drastic, but I believe most members of the royal family would be happier being productive members of their country, rather than dressing up for endless ceremonial and social events, giving speeches, and (above all) getting their photos taken.
@mchill saidSo in other words, you have no idea how the monarchy works and why it would be economic lunacy to dismantle it in the way you described.

They cost each Brit about a penny a day and their brand contributes to the UK economy over 2 billion a year. (And then some).
@ghost-of-a-duke saidThanks for keeping perspective on what is an important topic.

You're right, maybe I need a deeper understanding of how the monarchy works but please consider most of the royal family is a highly educated group. I believe their contributions in the areas of business, law and government would be valuable assets for Britian, and they would still have time to devote a few hours a week to social events, and photo op's.
@ghost-of-a-duke saidLet's say, if they could do with half of what they have today, they would still live comfortably. I say the same about Swedish monarchy. I think they do a great job, I wouldn't have it any other way.

@torunn saidKing Charles has already started the process apparently to 'slim down" the monarchy (to just 7). This will reduce the impact on the taxpayer as we go forward as a nation. But as I said above, the Royal family are excellent value for money and we need to protect the brand. (Not have them working in bakeries or in the local post office).

Whatever the public purse is willing to pay to maintain the Monarchy is a matter of political and public debate.
Edit but it definitely needs to be less imo. And the sexual rouge Andrew should never be permitted to hold a Royal position again ever, under any circumstances.
My first step would be to enforce that if they have personal assets (and they have lots) then they should pay whatever tax is due on them, in full, and the accounts should be a scrutable as anyone else’s.
@mchill saidThat deeper understanding will begin with the realization that the British monarchy needs to be entirely separate from such things as government, politics or law.

And the UK is full of people from all walks of life who are highly educated and an asset to Britain. A handful of royals would hardly make difference in these areas of work as opposed to their current roles in attracting tourism, promoting Britain etc.
You also miss the point of the 'social events' and photo ops' which are invariably ways to support a charity or promote British business etc.
@mchill saidCan't be done. Most of it is impossible to sell except to the kind of people who would destroy it. Would you love to see Balmoral castle turned into a B&B for rich American politicians and the lands around it into a fenced-off golf course? Would you like to see the royal crown melted down for goldy-looking chains for the latest rapper, and the Cullinan locked in a safe somewhere in the UAE? Because that's what would happen.

On the contrary, we already have too much of those. Also, while some of them are "well educated" in subjects like history and literature and didn't do particularly well, most seem to have matriculated at the universities of Marriage or Military. None of them would be allowed to be a solicitor; none of them should be allowed to be in either House; and several of them are in business already. You may not know Duchy Originals, but it exists. Some of them are in the arts business, making photographs or bespoke furniture.
* Release of all tax records for public scrutiny.
I'll agree with that if you promise to the same with yours. This is a good idea for politicians, who have the opportunity to make tax laws favouring themselves, and for C*Os, whose hold over the economy needs to be held to account. Those arguments don't apply to the royals.

Do you? Have you asked them?
@divegeester saidDo it to the likes of "Lord" Sugar and "Baroness" Warsi first, and I'll agree.

@mchill saidNo. No, they are not. Seriously. Harry couldn't get through high school without cheating. Randy Andy didn't study but went straight to the military. Wet Ed shouldn't have been allowed into university and got a Tutu in history goodness knows how. Did Diana ever finish school at all, or did she leave to become a secretary while waiting to marry Charles?

Seriously, none of them are all that intellectual. Nice, some of them, AFAICT, and doing quite well at their charity functions and so on; but quite unimpressive in the brain department. I don't believe for a moment any of them know how the horsey-shaped piece moves.
@shallow-blue saidKing Canute (1027) is believed to have been a chess player.

@shallow-blue saidHarsh but accurate. Fair one SB.
