you seem to quite a nifty player, but are you suggesting that any game where you are a knight or more ahead is won??? Or are you only talking about engames? Even here, pawn position is more important, isn't it? I've aways fancied trying to beat an oppo who has a rook against my 3 linked pawns.
I'm really just talking about games where there is no real hope. It all depends on the situation. Your example of extra pawns contains more than a ray of hope, b/c you just might force him to trade his rook to prevent you from queening one.
I'm not trying to promote any hard and fast rules -- just common sense, and a desire to get back to a board where both players are actually interested in what's going on.

No. Note that there are ways to win besides checkmate. This says to me that, although it is the most pleasurable way to win, it is not the raison d'etre. Thus we must say that the point of the game is simply to win. When you no longer have a chance of winning, then there is no point at all in playing to the very end, unless your opponent needs practice in playing the correct moves that properly finishes the game.

If so, then you have misunderstood the basic purpose of chess: it's bigger than just being able to say "checkmate!" at the end of it all.

I have always thought that people who play on, when the position is clearly lost, are poor sports. If someone is giving me a good beating, and I see no advantage in playing on, other than my opponent making a really silly error, then I resign, always complementing my opponent on a game well played. If they are good enough to reach such a commanding position, then they should not be expected to make such errors right at the death.

My mistake... but I'm sure there's another way to win besides checkmate and resignation, isn't there?
That makes three ways: Checkmate, resignation, timed out.
Also, if your opponent is removed from a game or tournament for any reason (Cheating, misconduct, etc...), even if it is not specifically related to your games with them. I suppose you might get a win by default. I don't know if their games in progress would count as a loss or just be cancelled. That's probably beyond the scope of what you are discussing here.
That's all I can come up with....
