9 27. Sun Shower Tirau ...[text shortened]... the end. This round I did very well, and made only 1 mistake, doing myself out of 2 points. 🙂
I absolutely loved Crystal Web, but decided to vote as per my original description of the round as being of Natural Light Phenomenon. Other pics that could be included in this group are Stone Gate (awesome), pure and sea-egg.
I really liked cloudburst as well. Now, that I'm an expert in photoediting (after using Picasa a bit, 😉 ) I felt that this one was improved a bit by warming up the colours a little. It seemed to highlight the tree in a nicer way, and the lit areas were brighter as well.
I was surprised that Night and Day performed best of my trio and I was super surprised that The Haunting hadn't gotten any votes at all(up until Noddy's late vote) as this is one my uber favourite pics. I love the colours and the cloud formation (I can see a snarling demon with a big nose, but that's probably just me), and I think the composition works well with the people watching "the haunting" from the safe side of the river and the cross on the left hand side of the pic warding off the evil. I'd appreciate feedback on why you didn't like The Haunting. Cheers.
Thanks,
D
BTW: whatsername was allowed to recast her votes as didn't realise that you couldn't vote for your own pics, and had done so.

ps: Nordlys' pshaw was to do with the fact that your vote elevated her from 3rd to 1st and she had mentioned after the last round that she felt bad winning 2 rounds.
Well done, Dan! That's a great picture. Like Ragnorak, I wondered a bit whether it fits into the category, but I decided that the reflections of the light in the drops fit well enough (although it would have fitted even better if there had been a dew bow in the web 🙂 ). Dweezil's third place is also well-earned.
Congratulations Tirau Dan on winning this round. I interpreted 'natural light' somewhat more strict while voting, but not when entering my own pictures. So even though I don't have a hand in your victory, Crystal Web is certainly a picture I enjoy. I liked Sun Shower a lot too.
Ragnorak: for me, the slanted horizon in the Haunting ruins the picture somewhat. I had the same feeling with night and day. I don't think horizons should be perfectly straight all the time, but to me slanted horizons most of the time look a bit sloppy. But that might be a personal thing. Otherwise, I think both pictures are pretty good. And I do see the demon :-)
Nordlys: Aurora Bird is fantastic.

But how would I straigthen "Night and Day"? And also, does it not mess up the depth of field of some pictures if you have the horizon straight? Like in Night and Day, I could straighten the mountains in the background, but as I remember the scene, those mountains are actually running off into the distance.
Just interested to learn.

Originally posted by RagnorakI liked "cloudburst", too, but the colours looked a bit strange, so I agree it could use some photoediting (and/or a better scan).

I was surprised that "Jalapeno" didn't get more votes. I really like how the colours of the sky are reflected in the foreground and mix with artificial lighting. I can't tell you why I didn't like "The Haunting" because I did like it. 😉 It almost made it into my top list. But I was not quite happy with the composition. There's too little sky (the most interesting thing about the picture) and too much water. Due to the dark foreground, the people look kind of cut off, and they (or what you can see of them) are too small to add much to the picture in my opinion. I can't find the cross you are talking about. 😕 As usual I hadn't seen anything in the clouds before you mentioned the demon, but when I went back and tried to find something, I first saw a dog (with a dark ear and muzzle) with a squirrel tail (the tail is approximately in the middle of the picture, and the dog is running to the right). Then I found out that I could also see something like the head of a demon, the squirrel tail being its nose, the ear still being the ear, and it has a very pronounced pointed chin. Is that the demon you are seeing?
Originally posted by NordlysThe sky got quite boring above where I cropped. Fair point on the size of the people. The cross is the thing sticking up between the two buildings on the left of the skyline. I think you've found my demon. 😀, nose is the nose, pointy chin, open mouth with a row of teeth at the top of the mouth. Hands up by its head as though scaring people. Clouds are great. 😉

I didn't necessarily mean there should be a bigger part of the sky on the picture, but the sky should be a bigger part of the picture.

What do you mean by series? How many photos and in which context?
http://community.webshots.com/photo/427539569oiQZXO and the next 5 pics.
I think its an interesting category cos it introduces the dimension of time into the photography.
