don' mean to step over the Metalica clan, but I figured one of them should have mentioned Lars, the bass player.

What about George Harrison
and his buddy Roy Orbison? neither quite young, but never made it to old age.

As a former Metallica clan member I thank you for the post.
But Lars is alive and playing drums. I think you meant Cliff Burton, the late bassist for the band. I liked Jason, and Robert is good too, but nothing like Cliff was. 🙁
