Errr... if someone isn't too clued up on which AV to choose than I seriously doubt they'll get anywhere with a HijackThis report.
At least with HijackThis you can post the log (http://www.hijackthis.de/) and get some proper feedback if there is any actual infection.

Something has managed to turn off my Norton Internet Security by making it think that its "trial period" has ended when in fact, I've had a Norton subscription for the past three years and it's nowhere close to expiring.
What I need is a good, free AntiVirus program I can install and run to clean out whatever it is that has disabled Norton so I can get the full use of it back (including its firewall protection).
Any recommendations?

After that, Norton was turned off, couldn't be detecting much if it was turned off. After using Avira to clean out the trojans, and I finally got Norton running again, not surprised it found nothing after the system was cleaned by Avira.
DON'T PANIC. If Norton didn't pick anything up then it could probably just be false-positives.
Choose one AV and stick with it. Please don't run two at the same time.
Run HijackThis to check what is going on in your system.
Good call on the HijackThis, though. I'll look into that now.

Hmmm, even Kaspersky got hijacked:

This is the 21st century way of saying, "butttttttttttttttttt"
I guess this is a "known unknown" type of situation.

Are you on drugs man?
That is the biggest load of tosh I have ever heard, the general mindset of a hacker is the same which ever part of the world you find yourself in, and as the internet is a global entity, a virus is usually aimed at an operating system or particular application.
Hackers can be select, but preventing them is more a firewall issue.
...[text shortened]... y are (Edit: if they were, how come you suckers still get viruses?) .
Bloody Rich Tea users.
If you think the mindset of the hacker is the same the world over, you don't know anything!
I agree on the firewall issue, but when I was talking about Norton or AVG or Kaspersky, I was talking about the 'suite'!!
If you're gonna invest in AV then, for a few quid/bucks/baht or bottle tops more, invest in a complete suite - that includes firewall.
However, and in retribution to your "all hackers are of the same mindset", I have 3 students at school who are whizz-kids and hack left right and centre - one was expelled for hacking into Thailands biggest bank and moving funds! These kids 'choose' which is the MOST COMMON AV SUITE used in their country - so it IS area specific. Norton is used very little in Asia - so would not be an attempted hack site. Avast and Kaspersky are used widely, and have been hacked and changed by these kids on various occasions - we have witnessed it!
If the can hack the suite, they can alter the firewall settings, and put in virus that track etc, we have also witnessed this....
Hackers are location specific. If they don't have any idea about how another culture works they certainly won't bother trying to hack it - especially in another language. Go on, tell me they do it with www.freetranslation.com.... 😛
So bog off with your 'are you on drugs man?'! 😠
