Millenium series by Stieg Larsson - the original Swedish movies. The three books were equally compelling, and the movies followed them closely. If anything, book 3 left you slavering for book 4, which I have bought but not yet read. I have no idea if the Swedes will make a movie of book 4, but I'm hoping.

Players Of The Cronkite?
Potassium Oozes Through Concrete?
Ping Ollie Through Clara?
But I'll give you a hint anyway: Johnny Depp, Geoffery Rush, and Keith Richards play bad guys to die for; Orlando Bloom plays the sap who has to wait till the 3d episode to get Keira Knightly's boot off, and they recruited Penelope Cruz to replace Knightly for the final episode. Got it now, Mr. S?

On the other hand, what I thought was the the most striking thing about the four Blackadder series was how excruciatingly bad the first one was (I tried it again last year, I still think it's a turkey) compared to how classic and utterly memorable series two was. Having said that, a lot of my friends liked series one and jabbered away about it at school the next day each week.
Blackadder: got very silly in the WWI series.

Originally posted by Ghost of a DukeGood point. Rowan Atkinson, to me, also seemed to be somehow 'trying too hard' to be unabashedly daft-funny in series one. The shift to him being exquisitely snide and jaundiced - and verbosely droll - worked a treat and carried the next three series to their place in BBC comedy history.

Stephen Fry and Miranda Richardson were excellent additions to the cast.
What does anyone think about the two Bean movies?
