I had pumpkin soup for a starter today at my aunt's and uncle's very close to their birthday party ... it was rather good actually.

I've never had pumpkin soup, although I've had baked pumpkins, pumpkin pudding and pies. I have had some butternut squash soup before that was out of this world.

Dunno, but similar soups are eaten all over that region. Rumania, too, IIRC. The original would probably use chili powder instead of Tabasco, though, but that's a quibble.
