If you like Stephen King you will love Robert R McCammon. Look for Swans Song for the first book of his that I recommend.

Anybody else read his work?

One of Kings problems is: No sex!!!!!! Is the guy asexual? With the stand if you really get into it, the evil dude is what gives it its umph. Come on Hound, this guy should be your Avatar, not some cuddly sheep dog. Where are all you SATANS proslytizers. hiding in a church pew? Next you'll be singing with the choir.

I have read many of his stories.

As already mentioned, the first 1/2 of "The Stand" is incredible, then I started losing interest. That said, I have read it 4-5 times.

"The Shining" was good. It's one of those rare cases where the movie may have been better.

"Salem's Lot" is a great book, but the movie was not so hot. I think it may be one of his best.

I really enjoyed "The Green Mile". It's another one where the movie did a good job of capturing the story.

I hope you enjoy getting to know Stephen King.

Just saw 'the Stand' for about the 5th time, its not a movie, at least the version I know, its a 4 part mini-series. Starred Gary Sinese and Molly Ringwold. In part 3, King makes a couple of cameo appearances,
The guy who brought in the a bomb, Trashcan, was a long time ago known as Max Headroom. I liked it. Heavily christianised however, which put me off some. I am reading another sci fi book by another author, totally unknown to me before this novel, The Bridge, by Janine Ellen Young. It goes in a vaguely similar way, except in her book, the virus was made by aliens around a nearby star whose idea it was to use a virus as a means of installing information about a starbridge into whatever intelligent minds it comes across, these beings live directly in space on asteroids, comets and such and don't need an atmoshere but mastered technology to such and extent they can launch these kind of spiderweb affairs at close to the speed of light which contains the virus. So billions of them are launched in all directions and one hits the earth, set in our near future, 2030 or so.
The virus does its job of installing itself into human brains creating a population of people who have in bits and pieces, the knowlege to build a starbridge but it comes at a huge cost, 4 billion dead as a result of the virus being mostly deadly to humans and it directy kills 2 billion and another 2 billion die in third world coutries because of loss of infrastructure and ancillary diseases like cholora and TB where the water supply was contaminated, so all in all 2/3 of the human race is dead but the survivers are striving to build the bridge. Its a dam good first novel. (soapbox time: IMHO it would do the planet good to lose 4 billion people, like the US has under a hundred mil and china has 3 or 400 mil, etc. It would be a good thing in the long run I think. Of course if something like that happened, I would be striving to be one of the surviversπŸ™‚

Stay away from the Dark Tower series as the ending is unsatisfying to say the least. Otherwise, any of his short stories make a good read, however, fore the most part, he's overated as a writer.

No overt sex, but all his books are oozing with sexual metaphor and tension. Carrie begins with her entering menstruation and not only does the killing of her mother rest utterly on her having crossed this line, but the scene in with the pig's blood is a direct reference to her menstrual activity. In IT the grown ups lose their abilities because they lose their innocence and this is not least in light of sexual activity. I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
