This sucks. Local news showed some lady up north of here who's house is being 'looked at'. She's doing about 100 thousand dollars of work on the house, but now has to stop and wait to see what happens.

Funny how far it is to rock bottom in the USA... we're not there yet, but getting closer and closer every year... every day it seems.

I agree. I think this is messed up too.

are they simply "seized", or are the current tennents paid? this is already existent in scotland, and the land for the highland fair is being given to edinburgh airport* for another runway. they are, however, getting paid for the land. 'tis still kinda cruddy though.

if you are familiar with scottish geography, you may wonder why the highland fair and edinburgh airport are so close. i wonder this too.

This is great....now, if the government gets a big enough "contribution" from a large, we ...[text shortened]... d land even against your will. That is fan-freaking-tastic.

OUR GOVERNMENT ROCKS.

Their is an upside to this, I believe. They do have to PAY for your land, and if I'm thinking clearly (6 am, probably not) you can demand as much money as you want. Not 6 billion dollars or anything, but maybe twice what it is worth. Or maybe they have an appraiser come in and then pay what they appraiser says it is worth. I don't really know.

The right of "eminent domain" has been around since before the US's inception. If the community needs to take your home for a civic work, like a road, airport, etc., they fairly compensate you for it, but you're out of luck. Nothing new or unusal about that - it stinks to be you, but for the greater good of society as a whole, you get to make the sacrifice.

What's new and different about this, is that the city government has a deal with a developer to take these homes and then let him build an office/retail complex in their place. This isn't an issue of the community needing to take your home because they have to widen a road or lengthen a runway, it's just a nice convenient place for development and you happen to be in the way. When I was in high school, there was an area a few mile from my house that was getting commercialized (high rises going up) and some developer wanted to take a block of house and turn it into a high rise building. He ended up agreeing to pay the owners 2 or 3 times what their houses would otherwise be worth in order to incentivize them to sell. If this decision had been in place, all he would have had to do was get the county to "condemn" their homes, and he could have gotten away with paying them "fair market" value for them.

Incidentally, the whole story-line for "Herbie Rides Again" (1971) would be pointless if the Supreme Court had made this decision 35 years ago....

That is pretty much the short and skinny of it. The entire thing makes me sick, to be honest. I can't believe that this sort of thing is allowed...who on EARTH would vote for this? Answer: NOBODY. Just another proof of how our idea of "a people's run government" just means that we vote in the people, who then screw us later. And now they can screw us, lock us in jail for "national security", tap our phones, search our bodies...and they can take our homes, to boot.

Gotta love big business...er, I mean governement....or should I say 'big government'?

PS: LOVED the Herbie comment....watched that movie all the time, as a kid.

How is that an upside?

If I OWN my property. I should have the right to CHARGE WHATEVER I WANT to somebody who wants to buy it. NO LIMIT.

Public-Use, I understand, but for private enterprise? NO FREAKING WAY.

This decision makes me sick. Unfortunately I'm too apathetic to do anything about it.
