1) How old were you when you started reading?
2) Are you male, or female?
Motivation: My daughter is 2 1/2 years old and has known her alphabet for quite a while now. She loves to sit and have me read books aloud to her and in the last few months she's started to recognize a lot of the words. I'm wondering if I'm crazy to think that she's about to start reading--or is she just memorizing what some words look like, but won't really be able to read for quite a while.
Btw, I'm male and started reading in 1st grade--I'm thinking that would have made me ~6 years old.

Male, but with a feminine nose 🙂

…especially the section Miscellaneous.
I would guess I was 6 or 7... (male) I was learning letters and numbers in kindergarten.
Kids learn different things at different ages; my boy was walking at 10 months. I also remember my cousin who was the same age as me who couldn’t talk yet, and me asking my mother why.

I don't want to scare you, most likely your daughter is just early in her development, but you might want to read a bit about hyperlexia, for example here: http://www.hyperlexia.org/ (haven't really checked out the link, but there seems to be a lot of information there)
Edit: Oh, I forgot to answer 2). Female with a male brain. 😉
I was almost 5 (female) and my son started reading words at 4.5. I don't remember being encouraged to read in kindergarten when I was little, but my kiddo was in the advanced reader thing in kg. Think they have the ability earlier than once thought.
2.5 seems very young, but doesn't seem out of the question.
