what is this and where does one find it on the computer ?
TCP or Transmission Control Protocol is part of a collection of protocols that make up the language of the internet.
It is best understood if we look at the OSI layer model which will make it instantly apparent of its function.
I suspect you have been asked to open a TCP port on your router to allow some communication to take place, rather than looking at a program or application that is just stuck doing nothing as you sit watching.
If you care to share what application you are trying to get working and the name of the router, I will simply demonstrate the procedure to success.
Kindest of regards
pp mush.
(If you have a software based firewall such as Zone alarm, that also may need a tweak).
i play on a scrabble type site called lexolous and it has recently added a beta
chess and poker section. when you open the window it reports that one must enable the tcp at 24000-24100 and i have no idea how to do that. the site does not
respond to contact information from users so i am at a loss.

they mean you need to poke a hole for that range on your firewall. which is either on your computer or your router-adsl.

I'll bet a billion galactic dollars on that OSI layer model is the absolutely last thing that'll help anyone to understand what tcp is.
But when it comes to boiling down a problem that defies logic it is your bestest pal in the world.
By breaking down the whole picture into the different parts of the OSI helps in identifying where in fact you have been a complete plonker.
Of course you can always look at the little flashy lighty thingy on the back of your network card and declare it bust, but when your nuts are in a vice, drinking meths just won't do (though it does help).
The OSI is for the ggay anyway, real men port scan everything within a hundred miles and add a bit more ping to their ping.
If in doubt, dump so much traffic onto the network so everyone gets bust.
And you can stick your Qos, I wee Qos.
I need to go and find a quiet place now.

Is your computery having a firewall?
(To my feends and colleagues who see what I have done there, your Welsh impersonations are worse)
