Perhaps you could have a one day time out, but the players would be allowed to
miss the timeout once without having to worry about losing the game. After that
they would receive a final warning saying that if they missed again, the other
player would have the option of claiming victory. This would allow a small safety
valve in case the player became temporarily indisposed.
If you are a good player just joining RHP(which I am not particularly),
then the new 10 game rule will be a bit unfair. The current top ten
have been able to play and win a helluva lot of games in a short
period of time Anyone joining now will be completly unabl to rise up
the table at any speed - even if you win continuously, it will be
impossible to get enough points to challange the top 10, as the
number of games will be too small.
I do however recognise the reasons for the imposition of the 10 game
rule, and I thank the guys for providing this site.
No it will not! This a "Correspondance Chess" site. What you are
proposing is "blitz chess"...completely different. In tourney play you
have two different systems...standard and blitz. Standard is usually 40
moves in 2 hours sudden death 1 hour....blitz is anything under 30
minutes. We would have to have two different rating columns for this.
Just like they do in FIDE and USCF.
Capiche?
Dave
If you want to play "Blitz" chess then there are alot of site
available...ICC FICS Yahoo Pogo..etc.
This is supposed to be a "Correspondance site" where you can take
your time. What if your baby gets sick or something? That takes
precedence over chess but it leaves the other player getting a win.
That is why I love this place so much..I can work way too much for a
week...and then finally sit down and do my moves without the fear of
losing due to my responsibilities
Dave
thats okay! definetely one day timeouts wouldnt suit your
responsibilities! but there will still be 3,7,14,21 available ! yes 1 day
timeouts is rhp version of blitz. exciting stuff ! only the
strong ,committed players should attempt it! its WIN OR LOSE! dog
eat cat. cat eat mouse. same thing. A POINT HERE THO. with only ten
games allowed with a mix of timeouts .i.e. 1,3, ect. a nick cant be
damaged all that much.! its not that you would have say 100 1 day
timeouts. which is what it was before.!if worst came to worst. max
points lost == 169 -- 280 on a ten game deal. that is good as we
have seen some nicks drop by 600 overnight! is that fair.
Congratulations with the 1st birthday!
I have been hesitating for several (personal) reasons to subscribe for
a pawn star. Your explanation has made me a little ashamed of
myself. Such a small contribution for such a marvelous site. I've
subscribed today.
Wish you lots of success. I know that i will benefit from it too.
greetings:
congratulations on the first year, chris and russ. i will be playing here a
year on the 29th april; a happy year it has been also. the ratings have
swelled a little since then though. one of my first games was against
bessyboo; she only had a 1300+ rating then...i wasn't that concerned
about playing her because i thought i would kick her ass. big
mistake!! got my ass kicked big time in that game...done better the
next time though. there is a lot more players here now, than there
was back then, so i can understand the server problems; sorry for the
trip down memory lane, but, such is life!! all i really wanted to say was,
good luck for the next year!!

imp..
I became a pawn star almost immediately after visiting your site, as I
know the time, effort and costs involved are hugh to continue RHP.
My contribution was the very LEAST I could do to support your
efforts!! This site is much better than simply playing e-mail chess
with other players. Here we can all view each other's game and
quickly post our replies in the games we have going from any
computer we're on!
I really enjoy this site and would not mind paying a small yearly fee
to continue play here, if it came to that. I'm thinking of about $10 to
$15, which most players could afford. I currently pay $50 a year to
play rated real time games at Chessclub.com (Internet Chess Club).
YES if we have 1 day timeouts every rhp member will need to keep
his/her eye on the time.how about a battery clock with date please!
complete with rhp logo! we can then set it to rhp time and date. not
only will it look good . but will be extremely useful at the computer. im
not into buying t shirts or mugs but a clock yes ! a clock gets looked
at more than most things. im thinking about just a small one for the
computer. BUT HEY WHY NOT A BIG WALL CLOCK ! with the rhp logo
on its face! it will help members to remember they have moves to
make. !
RHP is more of a like an email/correspondence site where players can
drop off their moves and go do something else while their opponent
ponders his/her next move. Of course, at times, players are online at
the same time and a flurry of moves are made; however, the time
control has long been set before this happens, so the use of a real
time clock would be unnecessary.
Still, those of you wishing to play REAL time chess with real chess
clocks, may play unrated games as a "guest" at www.chessclub.com
(or pay subscription to play rated games), or play for free at
www.chessnet.com and www.zone.com, just to name a couple free
sites. All these sites use time clocks that have some type of time
stamping for moves so Internet lag does not become included in
one's thinking time. Most sites allow you setup the time control you
want to use, such as, 5-0, 2-1, 1-1, 1-0 (first digit is minutes, second
is incremented time added to one's clock after each move) Therefore,
a 1-1 time control is 1 minute for game (your side - your opponent
gets 1 minute, too) with 1 second added to your clock after each move
you make. So, with a 1-1 time control you would not lose ANY time IF
you take only 1 second to make your move each time.
Please do try these other sites out for real time play. RHP is a
wonderful site for email/correspondence type play. Real time play
would overload RHP, which they do not need if they are to continue
this site. Besides, why duplicate services? RHP is rather unique
among chess sites!
Sorry Russ, what I meant was that as part of the merchandise that
could be bought through RHP, perhaps some clocks with a logo for
playing against real life opponents on your own chess board (when
you hit the top to stop the clock - sorry I dont know what they are
really called). Just thought it might be something that people would
buy.
