The wealth they 'built' was actually a result of reckless fiscal policy championed by Alan Greenspan. He made credit too easy to get and allowed people - Baby Boomers - to live beyond their means.
the credit crunch is only a bump in the big picture, it'll blow over in a few years. the money isn't disappearing into thin air, it's just changing owners. recycled if you will, another great idea from the hippies to save the world btw. - the 5000 billions which 'disappeared' from american stocks is somewhere waiting patiently, wealth is being redistributed. for every sell there is a buy. it'll come back when there's more money to be made, and most likely the american economy will bounce back first. possibly starting even as early as next summer, but probably 2010.
the car factories? they haven't been able to compete even in the 3rd world for ages, at some point they'll just have to go. the banks are being bought for huge profits.
we had the exact same situation in late 80s. over spending propelling the economy into a great depression that has been seen only a few time in the world. your situation isn't even close to as bad. we got over it, got wiser, and now are well prepared for the world wide recession. same thing in germany. but you'll pull up too, and in 5 years most americans will be wondering what all the fuzz was about. well obviously it was about billionaires losing a fraction of their fortune. you'll be eating exactly what you're eating today, and getting drunk pulling underwear on your head exactly like today. there'll be a few more homeless, but nothing drastic compared to the conservative legacy you have now. the bright side is you're getting an administration that actually cares about fixing the social injustice the conservatives liked to conserve (guess who was sitting on all the 98% of the dough?).

are you under the impression that american wealth of today was built up by someone else than those useless layabouts?

take a look at that curve, and do a little calculation of when the people responsible for it were born. yeah, it was the boomers. they also got rid of american apartheid, con ...[text shortened]... , at least it left something to do for the generation x, the ultimate rubbish (so far).

Y'know, I was sure somebody would jump in here with some crap about "The Greatest Generation", being the one preceding the Boomers. Well, guess what? They weren't that great. They came along at a time when the economy was in the crapper and they got out of high school just in time to go fight Hitler and Hirohito. This did NOT make them great; this made them damned unlucky. They suffered through the Depression, devastating war, and poor leaders (like FDR, Patton, Montgomery, Halsey) and yet some STILL managed to survive and make a life for themselves and their offspring.
Now, if you want to edit Brokaw's book and say they were "The Unluckiest Generation", I could get behind that.
Originally posted by PinkFloydI sometimes wonder how the ones who managed to start a new life after war were able to do that. I know a lot of them never did, killed themselves or each others in drunken fights. the murder rates (in finland) peaked after ww2, and have been in steady decline since that. and it's no wonder, when you've spent 5 years in a dark forest, sleep deprived for weeks, starving, killing people and watching your best friends getting blow to pieces next to you. you know the guys on the other side have no choice either, and so it all continues day after day, month after month and year after year... you're never really coming back. too far gone, too damaged, barely a human anymore.

most of them refused to ever speak of what happened on the front. now the last of them wake up screaming every night, back in the horrors, decade after decade.
not very lucky in my book.
Originally posted by wormwoodI'm afraid I don't share your optimism. Peter Schiff would also and Warren Buffet would also take exception with your assertions. I didn't call Greenspan a Baby Boomer; I only claimed he was their greatest enabler. And all that money you refer to with nowhere to go - you're right, it will find its places. The result of too much money sloshing around looking for a place to land will be hyperinflation. I hope you're right about Obama, I really do. I still hold that these people will be responsible for the destruction of a whole hell of alot of wealth. I've lost well into six figures in the last eight months alone. Multiply that by millions of people and I'm amazed that these Wall Street CEOs and Bear Stearns Masters of the Universe haven't been tarred and feathered in the streets.
