If serious reading is on the agenda......then I suggest one of Lundy Bancroft books....
Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men. It is about Domestic Violence and why men batter.
The Batterer as Parent: Addressing the Impact of Domestic Violence on Family Dynamics (with Dr. Jay G. Silverman)

When Dad Hurts Mom: Helping your Children Heal the Wounds of Witnessing Abuse is excellent for people trying to deal with children who have been abused.
Serious body-beating reading, I can do without.
(My apologies, sincerely, if you are personally somehow involved in any such battering, Aynat. It is an inexcusable facet of this male-dominated, violence-prone world that we have been born into... If you are so involved, get out and/or get professional help!)
Moldy - otoh - that was a fine little zinger, not to be overlooked simply for its political incorrectness. Wok with me through the valley....

The more people know about violence in the family, the greater the possibility of helping it's victims and the greater the chance of addressing violence in the world....it starts somewhere...
Yes, men do get battered.
Widget, lots of people say to women get out and/or get help. But, where does a woman go? How does she feed her kids? How do you get help when he leaves the house, takes the phones with him, the car and you have no access to money or the internet and the neighbors are at work?
The most dangerous time for a woman is when she is starting to break his control of her, leaving can lead to her death....
If domestic violence is to end it will require a society that understands the dynamics and is willing to impose consquences on batters.
PC= properly concerned....suppose there is someone on this site dealing with domestic violence as a victim or child witness-victim or as a perpetrator, a "lightly battered" joke connotes social acceptance of the battery. In the same way that using racial epitahs connotes acceptance of rascism. Words are power.
You might find these books mind-altering. You would find better descriptions of violence in the latest best-selling thriller....
Words are power. [/b]If you haven't read Alice Miller's For Your Own Good: The Roots of Violence in Child Rearing, I recommend it. Fascinating study of some spectacularly troubled childhoods (among which little Adolph Hitler, Christiane F.) and their contexts. Harrowing reading; incitement to weigh words.
Originally posted by Bosse de NageI read that long ago and had forgotten it. I would be willing to read that again, probably should.....

We need some funny books in here....Calvin & Hobbes?
Originally posted by AynatIt's a excellent book for anyone interested in how children can become twisted freaks and megalomaniacs. I was appalled and fascinated by the section on 18th century pedagogy--"break the child's spirit" as a watchword for education!

Think there need to be X number of people for this to work in a forum...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not really literature, is it?
I think Shavixmir's original title a touch pompous in keeping with the satirical intention behind his post.
For Your Own Good mixes pedagogy, history, psychology...I'm happy to read it (convenient, I have it)...I'd like some fiction too though, what do you suggest?
Just cos some of you were asking, the book club I started a while back ceased to be when Darv became chooser of the book and nobody could be bothered to read Kafka (including me 😳), so I like the idea that it was resurrected. I won't join in this time as I'm way too busy to read, but will do so when I return in the fall (as you americans call it). Oh and if Darv suggests a book, ignore him 😛
Kafka's great, but I wouldn't force him on anyone.
My idea was for everyone to plug books they really enjoy in the hope someone would read one and come back with opinions. So far Aynat & dfm65 seem to agree on one title which I like too...I'd like to promote (hold book up to camera with pearly whites aflash) M. John Harrison's scifi book Light, because it has great pace, plenty of ideas, and liberal doses of (non-gratuitous) weirdness, requires empathy and imagination from the reader, and is a bit of a mystery novel as well. Google M. John Harrison for more blurbs...
Starmann, waiting in the sky, can you tell me where to find RHP faces?
