It's gotta be one of my favourite dance tracks, ever.

2 weeks on from my original post and some every day listening to The Streets going on and I still can't get over the magnificence of "Turn The Page" and "Weak Become Heroes".

Just spent the last hour reintroducing myself to the genius that is Mike Skinner. Any other fans out there? If you don't know what I'm banging on about and you like pioneering music with lyrical brilliance over garage beats and classical instruments then my heartiest recommendation would be to go investigate π

*Waits for genius to come along and utter some tripe like "Metallica oWnZ j00"* π
For pure lyrical brilliance and wordsmithery, I would be hard pressed to point to a more fantastic track than "Lose Yourself" by Eminem.
Originally posted by ChrismoI know what you mean - when I started listening several months back I used to enjoy the whole album. There are undoubtedly "lesser" tracks but when put into context with the rest of the album their presence is justified.

After a while though the album couldn't sustain constant listening - and I fell back to just the two I mentioned previously, along with the two you just mentioned plus "Don't Be Late". Some of the beats and instruments aren't very easy-listening sometimes. For subtlety and sheer strength I find it possible to play "Stay Positive" over and over again (and frequently do when the mood requires it).
As for Eminem, he richly deserved the Best Original Song Oscar he won for "Lose Yourself". Lyrically he's very gifted, as well as being far more clever and acute than a lot of people give him credit for. The Eminem Show was a big step up from his first two records.
He's also arousing people's interests in lyrics and poetry in a way that the inestimably great Bob Dylan did. In fact in an interview recently, when asked about Lennon's and Dylan's infuence, the Irish poet and Nobel prize winner (literature) Seamus Heaney went on to refer to Eminem, saying something along the lines of "Eminem has sent a voltage around a generation", and went on to pay further compliments. Seamus Heaney! Praise indeed.

ok...but back to the streets.turn the page, stay positive and even the irony of it all are all spot on.as a lyricist,i think he's pretty much up there with eminem and bob.he's not quite god status like lennon or kurt, more of a clever stoner kind of dude.he manages to describe his world, people and experiences in a way i haven't heard too often.yes,i like this music.
