I thought the Age of Empires series was the greatest, and played that a lot. Total War was even more captivating. I recommend playing Medieval Total War for awhile so you will appreciate the improvements in Rome. Once you get to the point where you start beating the game, it's time to move on to Rome. In Medieval, you can quickly master the art of building the biggest economy, which makes you almost unstoppable (except with the Vikings Expansion when the Golden Horde show up ...). Rome is more nuanced, I have yet to figure out a strategy to be consistently unbeatable.
Originally posted by RookRAKCool, i'll finish this one first then. Can you play multi-played campaigns in Rome? My next door neighbour is playing medieval as well, we play risk together sometimes and would love to play TW instead but you can't do MP campaigns in medieval. I realize the game would take ages (a couple of days at least) but it would be nice to do once!
Yeah - it is.

If you like large-scale strategic games, you might want to look up Paradox:
http://www.paradoxplaza.com/
Their games cover periods from 1066 to the Second World War, and each one is quite different, but they all have a grand strategic outlook. Several of them have attracted a devoted army of fans who have written 'after action reports', strategy guides, mods and the like, most of which you can get at from the Paradox forums.
