I too married a woman whom I met on the internet.
I lived in Liverpool UK, she lived in Santa Barbara California. I had started visiting internet dating sites in the hope of meeting someone who lived in my area. Then I found the perfect woman, and she lived thousands of miles away. Twelve months ago, she moved to the UK, and we took the plunge.
As a way of meeting someone, it has its pros and cons.
The pros are that you can take the time to find out about someone before you meet them : you can exchange a lot of information, get a look at their picture, find out a bit about their lives. This is much more satsifactory than non-online dating services, where you have to try and pick somebody based on a 30 word advert or a brief questionnaire. In my case I took this to the extreme, exchanging daily e-mails (and a few phone calls) for months before we met up face to face.
The cons are that, though it's unusual to find people on dating sites who construct false identities, even if people tell the truth it's the weakest form of communication. A phone call, where you can hear the modulations of the other person's voice, gives you a lot of extra information about that person; and seeing them face to face gives you a great deal more information again through their body language, about their appearance, and so on. So you still need to actually meet someone if you are really to get to know them.
In the end, how you meet someone isn't really important : what matters is how you get on while you're together.
