My advice to you would be to tell the snoops to sling their hook when they come knocking at your door - do not let them in to see if you have a tv.
The other idea [if you stupidly intend to let them in] is to keep your tv i ...[text shortened]... ords you don't need to buy a licence. 😞

edit: Disclaimer; don't quote me on that. 🙁
I enjoyed reading that.

The fountain of knowledge down the pub is very much wrong on this one, he was right about dogs not being able to look up though.

I guess there are more plusses in living in a 3W country than I thought....

- I dont pay for TV in fact I have a pirated directtv card and get 350 channels free.
- I drink and drive all I want.
- I dont have to recycle and sort my garbage.
- I dont always wear seat belts
- I get perfectly good pirated copies of DVDs for 1$ US each.
- When Xbox Halo 3 came out I got a free copy 2 weeks before the US release date.
- I speed pass the cops at 90mph and they dont do anything.

Anyway dont ask me about the downside of living here.... 🙂

Another situation, I have a TV, it's wired up solely for the use of a 360, supposedly I don't need a license, how can I prove it? 😕
Not sure if this helps or hinders, but .....

You might still have a problem if you dump the TV altogether ...

I had a TV guy come around once and ask me if I had a TV.
I said 'No, what's a TV?
Unfortunately there were some commercial jingles that I like to play on
my stereo roaring in the background.
He then proceeded to take my 'details'. As I was correcting his spelling
of my occupation from 'none' to 'nun' (honestly, where do they find
these guys?). A second guy who was hiding around the corner appeared
and asked :

a) To come in and look around
b) For cash up front on the doorstop.

Now my answer to both of these was a resounding 'Ha!, you gotta
be kidding me, be off with you!' and that was that.

Later I realised how easy it would be for two guys to put on some
uniforms, knock up some fake ID and go around asking little old
ladies to come in and look around their flat and give them money
on the doorstep.

Is it just me or are the TV licensing people being very irresponsible in
their scare tactics?

I once asked the question if I could turn the colour down on my TV and get away with paying for a black and white.

Back in the Dark Ages (1960s or 1970s I think) Australia had this TV licensing bizzo, to pay for our publicly funded ABC (=BBC). A few bright sparks researched revenue and cost figures on license collection, and found that the net revenue averaged 4 cents per day per person. They got the media interested (it was an election year) and before we knew it, removal of the licensing system was a winning election promise. (ABC is now funded by consolidated revenue at around 11 cents per day per person, but that's inflation for you.)

If you UK guys put in the same effort you could achieve the same result. Go to it!

They dont tend to bother with vans now as they have handheld devices but saying that I would not worry yourself!

I live in a big house which has been converted into flatlets and by law each flatlet should have there own licence! however I have lived her 7 years and every week we get reminders and threats from TV licence people and as I am the only person who buys a licence I have gone out of my way to make sure the other flat owners get a licence as it pis*es me right off!

I have even rang the TV licencing people and offered to wait at the door and let them in to knock on the other tennants doors but they refuse saying 'can you confirm no one else has a licence? ok we will send someone round who will catch them' but they wont arrange a time for me to let them in.

They must have sent out thousands of these letters now and as yet 7 years on no one has a licence apart from me - I sure they would be hardcore if I did not bother renewing my licence but they seem happy they are getting something from the block of flats and as yet the nearest the have got to catching anyone else is to leave a card through the door.

I even had one of there advisors laugh at me when I offered to help them catch the other tennents out - so dont worry I'm sure you are safe!

The license fee is a small price to pay for having the BBC.

I do however wish to use the internet, and use my 360, probably plugged into a TV of sorts...😕 see my problem?
Sorry, just realised that my post wasn't that constructive, but this is just one of those things that really gets my back up (I stay out of the religion forum).

As for the law I'd only guess that if you have the ability to watch telly you need a licence. I'd think that's the spirit of it (spirit : tv tax, dear me)

I think it goes that DVD players and the like have whoojemeflops and whatchemecallits in their guts that enable you to watch telly, that's why owning one means you need a licence.
