Originally posted by pradtfFirst off, I prefer Kirk from the TV shows.... and felt he was a bit washed up in the movies. He had more cutting edge when he was young... and scooping on every alian woman he encountered. He was a brawler too. A real "Man's man".
agree on picard though janeway has noble moments where she matches him (eg the void).
kirk is good in some episodes (eg doomsday machine), but i feel the acting antics back then were really comical. what was good though was the way he tra ...[text shortened]... overturn society and bring ratings down 😀

I just felt he wasn't as "Cool" when he got older and fatter... and I was not impressed with any of the movies to the extent I had hoped.
Oh, and the best captain by far is Captain Pike. He's "The Bomb" and his first mate Number One was hot!
As for Picard and his Number One... Riker... they are both great. I like Riker... I always thought they picked him cuz he looked like a young Kirk... and I always wanted them to kill Picard off so Riker would take over.
Janeway is cool, but perhaps tries too hard sometimes? I think she would give Picard an even fight, and Kirk would have Spock give her a pinch on the neck as he was laying a big smooch on her.
Yes, Kirk and Janeway.... I can see them both now in blur-vision... just a rectangle of light around their eyes as they lean in for a kiss.
Ha!
Star Trek is one of the best things.

Originally posted by Phlabibitwell kirk might have gotten fatter, but he became wiser too - and his lines became funnier. that st4 had just about everything in it, but the 20th century exchanges between kirk and spock were some of the best stuff i've seen.

riker became fat far sooner than kirk and he did some really weird acting too. riker couldn't take over from picard - he wouldn't even go for his own command - they practically had to force him into it when picard was captured by the borg. some of riker's stuff was really good and he and everyone was simply fabulous in insurrection which ranks right alongside st4 for me.
but it's hard not to like all of them (though deana troy's psychobabbles got really annoying after a while). when we come across an episode after not watching for st for several months, it's like seeing old friends again. can't say that for any other show i've come across.

Originally posted by pradtfI agree, watching these guys since I was a little kid. Picard may be my favorite captain, but Data was always by far my favorite character. I couldn't believe how tore up I was when he "died"- I mean for one he's just a character in a movie, but also he wasn't even human! But yeah, I grew up with Data and the rest of them. That sucked.

And I really liked Riker, but as Number One. Couldn't see him as Captain. He made a good second in command I think. He wasn't strong enough on his own.
NC🙂
Originally posted by ncrosbyya, data is my fav too. spock comes really close though. unfortunately they wouldn't let his character develop fully in the 60s because of network restrictions - they always had to bring it down to his being unemotional vs the wonderful emotiveness of humans. however, being a vulcan, he handled it well despite the desperate malice of the producers 😀

killing data off was the most pointless exercise that has been yet conducted in the history of cinematography. i understand they are trying to bring closure to an era, but they don't have to do it through an error. that whole movie was very contrived anyway, with the parallels made with data and picard's 'doubles'. and the suggestion that the new data might emerge to 'replace' the original, may have some attempted poignancy to it, but it disregards 2 decades of AR (android rights)!
