At this point, cars started to furiously overtake me, creating a middle row between me and the cars going the other way. In the meantime the old lady stood in the middle of the street, her eyes bulging and scared to death because she felt she HAD to cross the street just because I was being nice. At some point, I thought she was going to throw herself in front of the incoming cars and pray for a miracle. Eventually, she went back to her side of the street and I never stopped in pedestrian crossings in Bulgaria again. It's too dangerous for the pedestrians.
