Originally posted by @great-big-steesI have that plus my ham rig, can talk to people around the worlld when conditions are right. Right now we are in solar minimum which sucks for DX. About every 11 years the solar flux maximizes and the atmosphere turns into a nice reflector for frequencies above 4 Mhz, sometimes as far up as a gigahertz or beyond. Usually the ionosphere turns transparent to RF from about 20 megahertz and up but when conditions are right, you can hear 'round the world' echo, which is where a radio signal bounces off the ionosphere which is so reflective the radio wave goes all the way round the planet sometimes three or four times. That is awesome to hear.
Now that's a looooong commute and one that would certainly need some entertaining radio.
To the misanthropic misbegotten merchants of gloom
Who look into their crystal balls and prophesied our doom:
“Let the death knell chime, its the end of time”
Let the cynics put their blinkers on and toast our decline.
Don't become demoralized by scurrilous complaint,
It's a sure sign that the old world is terminally quaint.
And tomorrow’s gonna be a better day,
No matter what the siren voices say
Tomorrow’s gonna be a better day,
We’re going to make it that way.
To the pessimistic populists who harbour no doubt,
That everything we make our way, “to hell in a handcart”.
To the snarky set, who’s sniping to get,
Anyone who puts their head above the parapet.
Don't become disheartened baby, don't be fooled,
Take it from someone who knows the glass is half full.
And tomorrow’s gonna be a better day,
No matter what the siren voices say.
Tomorrow’s gonna be a better day,
We're gonna make it that way.
