Emerson. I've never heard any others. Have you heard others?
I am trying to remember who played in the recording I once had, but can't find anymore... I am quite sure it wasn't Emerson, though. Now the only recording I have is the 2nd quartet with my own string quartet from sixteen (yikes!) years ago. I have also heard some of the quartets in concert or on the radio with various ensembles.

What instrument do you play?

Who are your favorite string quartet composers?

I take it you prefer these to the Emerson?

Cello.

If I could name only one, it would be Beethoven. The late quartets are amazing. I also love Schubert, Bartók, Shostakovitch, Brahms...

Any recs for a late Beethoven recording? I'd thought about getting the complete quartets by Emerson, but I've never developed a strong interest in pre-20th century music, but would really like to have a listen.

I love the cello. Perhaps my favorite instrument. What do you think of Ernst Reijseger and Tristan Honsinger? I've wondered what a cellist would think of them.

Even though I am a professional musician (or semi-professional now, as I am mainly working as a music therapist), I own very few CDs (I think I own more LPs than CDs, but that's not more than half a bookshelf either) and know little about what's out there, so I don't really know what to recommend. Anyway, Beethoven was so much ahead of his time in his late works that it could just as well be from the 20th century, or maybe the 25th. Very fascinating music.

I have to admit that I hadn't even heard of those two cellists before. 😳 So I don't have an opinion about them either.
