I worked midnights for a long time, and while I didn't care so much if I fell asleep at work, I had a fairly long commute where it was much more important for me to stay awake. My tried and true method was: talk radio. The more obnoxious the program, the better. Listening to music never worked very well in keeping me awake. It was too easy to sublimate wha ...[text shortened]... offended or angered by what the idiot on the radio is raving on about. It always worked for me.
I agree with your post, that talk radio is the ticket. I find I get way too annoyed at the idiots spouting their right-wing agendas, tho, so I usually listen to a very interesting program called Coast to Coast AM that is only broadcast in the US and Canada right now (and on the internet). The wide variety of topics and the interesting guests usually hold my attention enough not to snooze off. And I agree that music just isn't that good at keeping you awake.
I remember some famous person saying they would nap in an armchair holding a spoon in their hand over a bowl on the floor. This person said that the complete rest and relaxation achieved in the time between the spoon leaving his hand and it hitting the bowl left him feeling refreshed... Not sure who said this, but I think they were being humorous, so I'm thinking it was Mark Twain or someone like that...

I bet that you really are an insomniac.
The reason is: you are absolutely right!
By increasing the awareness, there's a smaller chance of falling asleep.
Windows down, sing-along songs on the stereo and diet coke (or a double espresso) in your hand...
