The news says the USA got 104 medals but does that mean all the medals picked up in team sports, say a team got 8 medals, does that count 8 towards the total or is it just one medal for the team counted in the medal count?
silver or bronze -- it counts as one medal, regardless of how many people receive it.

I think they should tab the score as follows:
3 pts Gold
2 pts Silver
1 pt Bronze
If so the score would be:
USA 225
China 190
Russia 155
GB 140
To be really fair the overall medal tally should be divided by the number of millions in a nations population.
Now let me see:-
UK = 1.016
Russia = 0.566
USA = 0.346
China = 0.087
