I didn't "Reply" @ Suzianne so you wouldn't get a Notification :-)

Yes I knew it was the 40's (not at the time - I was maybe 11 or 12?), but no idea about printing up a special edition paperback sent to the troops until now. It feels like that could not happen today.

Physical books don't seem have the same magical appeal in modem life. The idea of spending your entire summer vacation in the back yard reading paperbacks feels historic somehow.
I used to go to the Visiting Nurses Book Sale they have in February every year, usually spending about $50 (that buys a lot of older, gently used books, generally about a dollar or two each.).

Got most of my chess library that way, all my Bond books and quite a few classic Sci-fi. I still haven't read them all and I haven't been in a few years now. By necessity, I have a lot of bookcases in my house.

Cujo by Stephen King (school book report by force, at least they let us pick)

I prefer books that are historical fiction like Fall of Giants, Grapes of Wrath, North and South, anything civil war related, anything by Wilbur Smith, John Saul horror fiction too.

I've read enough books it's hard to remember them unless I see it in my hands.

Edit: I haven't read anything in almost 10 years.
So no doubt you've read Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, yeah?

Books Sales are a true treasure. I found a used and a little worn book once called Peter Pan. To this day that remains my favorite story.

Over the years I have given a lot of used books as presents. Its a running commentary with my teenage nephews - imagine how different your lives might be if you read all the books I gave you. :-)

What was the first novel you ever read outside of a school curriculum?

Mine was a novella for children called "The Magic of the Glits" that I just ordered for my son to read.

The second novel I remember reading on my own was by Robert B. Parker called "God Save the Child", which I really enjoyed and lead to reading a few books by that author.
Nice thread.
1st novel I remember reading was a story of space travel, a teenager who went to a mall in a colony on Mars, I don't remember it well and I never found the book again. But I remember that everyone roller-skated everywhere. It was a simplistic happy story. It was a lovely escape and gave me a love for reading. I was 12, I think. Maybe 13. I had picked it up in the school library at lunch break.

Is that where he runs away or tries to and later he gets into a little scuffle and thinks he is no longer a coward?

I'm sure I've read it but I'd have to be holding it in my hands to be sure.

Fun Fact! I'd be running away from those civil war battlefields too πŸƒ

120 Days of Sodom.

6 years old.

Good times.

Shrinks are expensive, though.
