I would disagree. On some forums I visit, people with viruses looking for help to get rid of their viruses/spyware have AVG. I have never seen people with Zone Alarm looking for help like AVG, so Zone Alarm is better than AVG.

Also Zone Alarm comes with a firewall so Antivirus+Firewall is better than just Antivirus.
So, you're basing your recommendation on a few posts in some forums you visit?

How very scientific.

Not a few posts, or unscientific a guestimate. It would be like asking how many people use IE, use P2P, surf dodgy adult sites, have AVG and end up asking for help for what are self-induced problems.

Typical users of Zone Alarm (firewall + antivirus) are more security conscious than someone who just uses AVGFree (and typically engages in risky behavior on the internet).

100% science.

I agree with cashthetrash, spybot search and destroy with Ad-aware to scrounge for lurkers in my P.C.

StopZilla has been the best against spyware for me. It caught several things that Spybot, Ad-Aware and AVG didn't.

My own recommendation would be :-

1. Switch to non-activex browser like Firefox.
2. Avoid risky behavior i.e downloading cracked software or surfing for adult material.
3. Antivirus/firewall as a basic. Firewall good for catching outbound connections.
4. Malwarebytes/Spyware S&D/Hijack this to monitor anything not caught.

There's also the full version of AVG that comes with a firewall and anti-spyware.

The way I look at it is this:
the 'security all-in-one-suites' are like the decathletes of the olympics - although they are good, they are unable to compete with the top individual event specialists.
I still think Zone Alarm is a great firewall. And others are better for Anti-Virus.

Just my opinion.

edit: and unlike AntiVirus programs, you can safely run a few AntiSpyware programs at the same time.

I agree. The basic thing is to get "something decent" in place other than the default firewall in XP and a basic AV. The basic firewall in XP cannot stop outbound connections so gives a false sense of security.

I don't think it has been mentioned but a "decent" package is ESET Smart Security. Not a memory hog like Norton and fast scans.

In general I agree, but suites have the potential to make better use of computer resources. So they (should) slow down your computer less.

Do they?

An award wining suite like ESET Smart Security will use less resources than just Norton AV alone. I haven't tried AVG suite but AVG 8 "eats" resources, just google "AVG 8 resource hog".

Firewall: Zone Alarm(free)
Anti-virus: AVG(free)
Anti-spy: Addaware(free)

These are what I use but there are many alternatives that are also free. In my opinion, paying money for security software is unnecessary. I NEVER have and I’ve NEVER had problems.

If memory is an issue this is no memory hog. It is very efficient and uses much less memory. Some of the older anti virus products is outdated and this is a much smarter system. Don't take my word for it, but at least read about it.

I used to use zone alarm, but I had too many problems with it, usually some kind of conflicts caused browser slowdowns. I switched to 'Sunbelt personal firewall' and have had much better performance. http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/home-home-office/sunbelt-personal-firewall/

+5 I'll keep that in mind. There was another one called Comodo but I haven't looked it up but sunbelt looks good.
