Common sense. I have no anti-virus software, and never have done. You should be pretty safe if you don't open suspicious e-mails, and stop visiting those dodgy porn sites π
Also, you don't need to go to a pron site to get a virus.
for a full free anti virus ,add and spy there are 3 things needed avg anti virus is good but wont stop a virus coming in of a web site so weekly upate and test when it checks e-mails it will stop them coming in by not allowing e-mail to finish downloading and it will tell you to run check ....spy bot search and destroy will get rid of all spy wear wich can be as deadly as a virus same again weekly check and update ....adaware s.e will remove all add wear and any spy wear that slips the rest these keep me running a good speed dial up connection thanks for listeningπ

I would also recommend getting Spywareblaster and Spywareguard which are small programs that will definately help. [I've used them for a while now]
Both available here at no cost;

thanks everyone for the advice.
i'm going to go with AVG (plus adaware etc) - the free option - once my norton subscription runs out in 4 days' time.
i've just switched from ie to firefox, so that should help, plus i've just downloaded thunderbird (to replace outlook - and will also replace norton's anti-spam stuff).
hooray - more money for mojitos!

..Right now its just a little annoying, popping up...
If you go to the AVG Control Center [click icon by clock] you can select the E-mail scanner section and then properties where I think there is the option to turn off the notification everytime you receive an e-mail.

If you're a Windows user, you'll be infected. And you have no common sense.
If you're a Linux user, then please accept my apology.
With the proper precautions it's possible to stay clean....maybe not as easily as with Linux but it can be done. π

Also the comparison time should only increase proportionally to log(n) where N is the number of signatures, if the comparison has been programmed efficiently. Of course if they haven't done that then it would grow as you say.
Here is another question, one that worries me more as time goes
by:
When I was first introduced to spybot about three years ago (had
problems with Gator I think on my workstation at work, Dell told me
to download spybot, which cured the problem ATT)
When I first used spybot, it had about 5,500 entries.
Now three years later it has grown to over 32,000 ...[text shortened]... d keeps up, we will be running 6 hours
of anti crudware and getting two hours of work each day.
