Ok, see this is why RECS are cool:

The main reason behind it, is that people want to feel special. All people want to feel loved, to feel wanted. We want to feel like we belong, and that we matter. Now, in an online community such as RHP, some people feel that they can judge their RHP popularity, based on the number of RECS they have. Even if this is not true, it makes the person feel good about themselves, and so this makes it a good thing.

If it makes a person's day to see that they have gotten a rec for something they wrote, then that rec was a cool thing. If you'd like the logic behind this, please see below:

1. If a person feels good about themselves, it is cool
2. Recs make a person feel good about themselves
3. Therefore, recs are cool
