I have a smartphone (a HTC Touch Pro) and no data plan. I wanted a full keyboard so that I can use the phone to write notes at work (I use Word more than any other functions of the phone, including phone calls and SMS). I also wanted to have a phone that can replace my laptop most of the time when travelling. So it's important to me that I can use the internet with it, but it's not something I am going to do a lot; and in many places you can get free wireless access anyway. Those data plans are only useful if you use the internet a lot and don't usually have access to a free wireless net. Oh yes, and when you travel to a foreign country, that most likely isn't even covered. So I don't think you can conclude that people who don't sign a data plan don't use the features of a smartphone.
I got my first mobile phone bill a few days ago, for the first two months. It's 15 NOK (about 2.70 Canadian Dollar). I am glad I didn't sign any monthly plan, data or otherwise.
Originally posted by uzlessIt's tough to actually get "dumb" cell phones anymore. I never use data or text messaging functions, and I'd be happier if they weren't even available on my phone. But it seems like that crap is ubiquitous anymore.
Do people buy these phones just because they want to be cool? Is that it? Something to show your friends hoping they think you are cool? Why buy the phone if you aren't going to use the features it was designed for? Just get a regular phone! Doesn't that make sense?? Vanity is a crazy thing i guess...
I do use the calendar, alarm clock and stopwatch functions, and I'm glad for those.
The crappy camera I could do without.
Mostly I just wanted a plain phone without a bunch of extra features. The only thing I want specifically is a flip-style phone, so that I can put it in my pocket or toss it in my glove box or pack and not have to worry about any buttons getting pushed. But the stupid phone designs nowdays all have buttons on the outside of the flip-phones. That's even more annoying than the data service that I didn't want.
If the phone companies want to impress me, they should make some dumb phones. Hell, I might even pay extra for that!

If you use Firefox and Adblock, you can easily block any avatars that you don't like. I have done that a few times, especially with flashing avatars that hurt my eyes.

Im in the UK so "data" isnt really a word that is in common use, if you explained what you mean then maybe that would clear things up.

Now for the answer to Useless, yes, I bought the phone for the "data" it is supplied with, so far I have used Blackberry messenger, email, MSN, google maps, youtube, here and facebook on the phone, aswell as the normal text messages, phonecalls and calendar use.
Do you need all this stuff? Well, I suppose it depends how high profile your life is, if you flip burgers in McDonalds then I guess not.
