Do you not care that your partner will be married to someone who looks like a 50 year old by the time your 40, or that your children will have to cope with you dieing in your 70's?
like most teenagers, i started smoking in order to appear older.
i then got to enjoy it and i still do, thats why i still smoke.
maybe i'd look a bit younger if i gave it up, but i look and feel pretty good for my age.
oh yeah, ps: my wife smokes more than me 😛

If I ever started cigarrets id rather smoke crystal meth. If im going to destroy my body and make me look messed up id at least like to do ...[text shortened]... asams at once 24/7 and feel like I am invincible than simply feeling "slightly more relaxed".
I made a conscious decision to start smoking at the age of 36 when I read in the medical literature that smokers have a significantly less incidence of Parkinson's disease, Ulcerative Colitis and Alzheimers disease - the latter being the worst death I consider possible.

That's true... smoking has benefits too 🙂 But what part of the cigarette makes you less prone to Parkinsons etc.? Maybe you would be better off smoking pipe or cigars then cigarettes 😉

In parkinsonism and alzheimers there is impairment of systems which use a transmitter called acetyl choline. Nicotine works on acetylcholine receptors.

So, if I understand it well... you need the nicotine. Is that right?

Possibly but it is very complicated.
I also smoke because of the Salmon Principle:
Only the best fish swim against the stream
or
If the medical profession tells you that something is bad for you,
it is almost certainly good for you.

eg in the 60s finnish doctors proved that butter caused atherosclerosis and the world changed to margarine.
Now the same scientists admit they were wrong and butter is safe.
I never ever changed to margarine

I'm an occasional pipe smoker myself (always outside, never around other people)... Ask the spiritis of Tolkien, Einstein or Lewis if it was all that bad for them 🙂.

I take it that you are a moderate smoker, and not a compulsive chain smoker (because that IS really damaging to your health). Smoking is like alcohol... be responsible and moderate, and it might even extend your life span 🙂

What's wrong with dying in your seventies? How old are you planning to become?

My grandfather smoked woodbinds from the age of fifteen and made it to ninety. . . . Never did him any harm.

This fact is is the basis for my back up plan. . . . I if keep failing to give up.
