Originally posted by elvendreamgirlActually no, black panthers can be leopards or jaguars, they occur in both species. The jaguar, Panthera onca and the leopard, Panthera pardus are usually a yellowish colour, but occasionally they are found with black coats and this is what we call a panther. In Jaguars the gene for black fur is dominant and so black jaguars really are dark black in colour. In leopards the gene is recessive and as such is less dense in colour due to double allele mixing. Under good sunlight the varigated spots and lines of lighter fur can be differentiated.
Leopards are panthers!
I prefer Jaguars myself, they are found in South America (unlike leopards which are African and Asian in origin), are stockier and have a big fluffy paws and gentler faces.
Originally posted by StarrmanI once got to pet a panther. It was so incredible. You can still see it's spots even though it is solid black. The spots grow in a circular direction.

Originally posted by trawets113I believe Leopards actually don't live and hunt on the plains to much. Their camouflage is more suited to denser areas.
Leopards are big cats that live in the jungle and on the plains of africa and they tend to hunt gazelles, wildebeasts etc. They are ambush predators.
