Thanks for that, it was rather an interesting history lesson!

I also remember A/UX which was an Apple Unix released in 1988. I remember you couldn't buy the thing without a hard disk and in those days a hard disk was a significant investment. It was rather cute, and looked rather Apple like though nobody bought it.

Do you think Windows got their market by having a quality product? Any chance that there was more to it than that?

wait about 3 more years before you get a PC with Vista. They released vista about oh 3 years too early before they worked out all the bugs. I have 2 computers with Vista (laptops) and put XP on them both simply because microsoft relies on error reporting to report the lines of code they need to fix. wait till the updates come out, and there are actually programs and hardware you can integrate with it.

Mac relies on commercials, because really they rely on the youth and do the youth know anything about where computers come from? Some yes but to actually have owned say a commodore 64? MAC relies on commercials thus relying on ignorance by gaining a popular vote by slamming another product thus has been true through the history of competing products i.e coke and pepsi. Dont buy Vista, wait a few years till they've managed all the updates it was a ploy to come back at Mac stick with XP. Mac and Windos use different emulation to process from the same technology only you pay more for a MAC so MAC can pay for all the commercials they used to slam Windows.... Windows will outlast Mac in the long run simply because Windows has always been simple and created from the principles of 4 basic technologies not invented but incorporated in the garage of Bill Gates and he's not overcharging for that technology as long as there are 5th world countries producing the software and parts to develope it's systems. GUI.

What??

What are these four basic technologies that Bill Gates incorporated in his garage?

You think Windows is cheap?

Mac relies on commercials

Mac maintains strong sales from repeat buyers with strong brand loyalty, not only because of their quality products, but also because Apple continually has the #1 rated customer service department. There are idiots and jerks who work for every company, but the overall experience with Apple consistently rates #1 against other computer manufacturers. Note: this is not strictly a Microsoft vs. Apple issue because Microsoft does NOT make computers while Apple makes the Mac. In these customer polls it is Apple vs. Dell/Gateway/etc... Apple doesn't just make software (OS X/Quicktime/Appleworks/GarageBand/etc.), it makes a lot of hardware (Macs/iPhones/iPods/Airports/MightyMouse/etc) while Microsoft only makes software. Just something to keep in mind sometimes when making comparisons.

MAC relies on commercials thus relying on ignorance by gaining a popular vote by slamming another product...

The PC vs. Mac commercials. They're funny cuz they're true! Seriously though, I understand how a company's commercial can actually turn you off even before you try the product. From personal experience, years ago, Burger King used a commercial campaign that didn't advertise any of their products, and instead slammed Wendy's and McDonalds by having their corporate mascots in their TV spots. I got so sick of their commercials which seemed to do nothing but slam the competition without giving me a reason to actually like their product. I vowed never to eat at a Burger King. And I held to that vow for years and years, never visiting their restaurant even once. Until one day... omg!omg!thesewhoppersCHOMP!CHOMP! blindforsolongMUNCH!MUNCH! BK!BK!moremoremore!... you get the picture. Trust me, don't bash the product just because you don't like the commercials. You might be missing out.

Mac and Windows use different emulation

That's not going to be true any more. When Macs used the PowerPC chips, they had to use software to EMULATE the x86 architecture when booting Windows through, say, VirtualPC software. But now that Macs use Intel chips, emulation is no longer necessary, and the next great stage will be VIRTUALIZATION which will allow Mac users to have OS X sessions AND Windows sessions... running concurrently!... on the same desktop at the same time! Now how great is that, c'mon admit it. When Apple releases the new OS X version 10.5 "Leopard" this fall, and Vista finally gets more bugs out of its system, then Mac users will have the best of both--the world's best operating system ( OS X ) and access to those teeny tiny few Windows programs that are forced upon the mac user by entrenched IT and education departments who insist on using Windows only.

from the same technology only you pay more for a MAC...

That argument has pretty much been debunked. In a feature-by-feature comparison, Macs are comparable in price to other computers with the same options. But even Mac users will admit that Apple's RAM is the most expensive RAM on the market. 3rd party RAM is the way to go for this one.

...Windows will outlast Mac in the long run...

This might be one of those apples-to-oranges comparisons I mentioned earlier (no pun intended). Windows is software, but Macs are hardware. As long as Macs are made, I imagine that OS X will be around. And though I can imagine a future where the Windows operating system finally collapses under its own bloat (requiring a complete rewrite from the ground up), I can't see any reason why Microsoft would ever disappear as they make some very nice software -- Microsoft Office suite, for example. As a company, Apple is diversifying nicely into areas besides computers (iPods and iPhones) so I think that even if the far future sees cutbacks in their computer manufacturing (like how the once gargantuan IBM finally had to abandon making desktops), Apple will be solidly placed to compete in the future with their other products.

and created from the principles...

Microsoft has no principles. 🙂

... of 4 basic technologies not invented but incorporated in the garage of Bill Gates...

I think you're getting Bill Gates confused with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak who built the first Apple computers in Steve Job's family garage, the Apple Computer Garage, 2066 Crist Drive, Los Altos CA.
Quick pic of Jobs in front of his old family garage:
http://www.landsnail.com/apple/local/garage/apple.html

Fun Fact "Bill Gates had his house designed on Macs." Most of the work on designing the Gates home was designed by hand, but the BCJ architects have always been devoted Mac users, and whatever work was done on a computer was done on a mac!

and [bill gates is] not overcharging for that technology....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Thanks Wilson, I needed that.

I wouldn't use this point to persuade people of the value of your Mac.

You've been able to run Windows on Linux and Linux on Windows for years and at the same time. Currently running Slackware, Windows XP and Ubuntu all at the same time on my desktop. Even Microsoft are getting into virtualization.

I've heard that for Vista the microsoft guys stole a lot of ideas from the Apple/Macintosh software, so if you go for something microsoft I think you shoulf definitely take Vista as it will, for you, take less time to get used to, and Vista seems to be running as wel as XP already, so it'll be usable as well 😉. Good luck in picking your new pc!

Hi Wheely,

I DEFINITELY would use the point of Mac-virtualization to persuade people of the value of my Mac since one of the main arguments of Mac-haters has been that there isn't enough software out there for the Mac. With Mac virtualization (coming in 3Q or 4Q 2007 with the release of OS X Leopard), Macs will be able to run OS X and Windows programs concurrently. That's good flexibility and good value. Mac-haters need to stop using outdated, no-longer-applicable, 15-year-old arguments. It makes baby kitties cry. Apple didn't sit still; they've evolved and improved and they are very worthy machines. If someone is a graphics-intensive power gamer, I'd say go with a winbox. But if not, I would heartily recommend a Mac for their consideration.

i believe microsoft severs use apache, a unix-based server program...

also, with IE6 for the PC we had a shocking progam that defied every standard put in place for the internet. however, with IE6 for the mac we had a beautiful piece of software that was complient with all the standards...an attempt at converting the few? i think IE7 is complient with standards, although i'm not sure as i'm a firefox-er...

Apple now use Safari whose HTML rendering engine was taken from the KHTML libraries. KHTML was developed by the wonderful guys and gals of the KDE desktop environment, a linux application.

Microsoft don't use Apache, they use IIS which is why they suck so much at web serving.

Every version of IE has broken standards. It's the way Microsoft works to remove competition. Break the standards with an application that is provided by default on every PC sold. People start writing for the new broken application and all the competition lose out as the new standard is at best just proprietry and at worst patented. Microsoft were convicted of criminal behavior for this.
