No, he's right, Trev. It's a stupid name. 100 years ago, there weren't any Cubans, Dominicans or Japanese participating in the World Series. So to use that reasoning is totally bunk.
However, it's a traditional name and an embedded part of American culture and they certainly won't change it now! Could you imagine if they renamed the World Series? There'd be millions of crackers and rednecks up in arms!
I heard in a stand up comedy performance about how its funny that the World Series is won by America every year. I think its a hanus name and should be called MLB championship or something to that affect. And while its true that there are many foreign players in MLB, the majority are American. I think its a bunch of crap that its called America's favorite pass time, Football(American) and NASCAR are both much bigger than MLB could even dream to be.
Originally posted by darvlayI haven't checked out the stats myself, but I heard some NLCS analysis the other day and they said that the Cards were 11-5 against Houston this year, and the big 3 (Clemens, Oswalt and Petitt) were something like a combined 2-4 against the Cards this year... St Louis is definitely not afraid of those guys... Could be a great series though...
The team with the best pitching will win. The Astros. Possibly the Cards.
I can't believe Clemens is still going the way he is... It's been 19 YEARS since he pitched against my Mets in the '86 World Series...and he's STILL kicking ass out there... wonder how many players' careers have begun AND ended during those 19 years?
Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I never thought I'd see a better pitcher than Tom Seaver. But Clemens could very well be the best ever.
Tough call, should be a good series regardless of who's in it, but the Cardinals should be the favorites.
Of course, the AL gets home-field advantage in the WS, having won the All Star game this summer...
And isn't it ridiculous to have both the ALCS and NLCS games played at the same time (8 pm EST on Wed)? Does any other sport do this? Can you imagine the riots if the NFL decided to play the NFC and AFC championship games at the same time? Or the NCAA Basketball Tournament playing both national semi-final games at the same time, on two different networks?
Does MLB actually want people to watch their product? You gotta wonder sometimes...
Since my teams are all long gone by now, I just hope we can get some great games to watch (and they can play at least some of them in less than 3 1/2 #$%(*& hours)... it's ok if the 18 inning games last 5 hours or so, but there's no reason for a 9 inning game to take 3 hours to play, other than laziness on the umpires part...
