Hey,there was a 'play the computer' feature.Whatever happened to that?
You could still download the program and play against it offline. Most of us came to the site to play against other people anyway.

Just to add a bit more detail to Chris’ story. ( Sorry, I feel like I’m recounting the discovery of some world changing invention, but there it is, it may be of interest to some of you.)
The idea for this site came whilst having a lazy bath one Saturday morning. I was chewing over a few ideas for a website to develop, envious of a friends personal site which was doing ok. (www.uktvadverts.com, give him a visit, he could do with the hits 😉 ) Anyway, my main interest in life has always been technology-for-entertainment, and with the success of Rival chess, it made sense to write an online correspondence chess site. Believe it or not, I did not look at a single competing site until I had finished the first version -I didn’t want to start adopting ideas from elsewhere before I had exhausted my own.
The first lines of code for this site were written whilst stuck in Scotland at my future wife’s grandparents house. It was a couple of days before Christmas day, and their house had no pub within walking distance. This, as any British person would tell you, is *not* a good situation to be in. So with nothing to do, it started….
I used a very old laptop I had borrowed and used a language called ColdFusion. (A language I used day in, day out at work). When Chris offered me the use of his server (I, too, thought he was nuts spending all that money), not wanting to miss out on a good (FREE) thing, I quickly recoded all I had in PHP. Man, am I glad I made that decision early on…
And yep, I did indeed have serious doubts over the site name. And I still did, until recently.
Oh, just to wrap this up. I know I’ve mentioned this on numerous occasions before, but I really must thank again the ‘anonymous saviour’ of this site. A user of this site showed incredible faith in us and donated 3 months server fees to help us get another machine when we were struggling –the site was falling over 3 times a day, and running sooooo slowly. That was a big turning point in getting us to where we are now.
But I really believe the job is only half finished, I have many, many enhancements to make. This is the reason I really can’t wait to start working fulltime on this, successful or not in the long term, I just want the time to develop it to the point where I’m satisfied it is good as it can be.

Yeah, well... 😳 [embarrassed]
Funnily enough, some people I used to work with still call me that - just because they used to use this site during their slow afternoons at work. That names comes from the handle I once used online when playing Quake and CounterStrike a few years back - RuzzKill.

But it's true!! When I started playing chess we had to walk 30 miles to find a game.....it the blinding snow.....uphill........barefoot.....the pieces were made from ice so you had to finish all your games before spring thaw........
"Back in mah day at t'beginning of this chess place on interweb, we didnae have yellow fancy faces to put in t'forums, na di' we have no big community an' all, just a few of us ol' folks scratching round fer a game - none of this 'open invite' malarkey, ... when a rating of 1353 was good enough for a place in top 10
