Originally posted by SuzianneYou have a point with the apostrophe, but it's a well-established abbreviation - you don't write " 'bus" or "gym' " (spaces added for readability) either, do you? And the "s" is not part of the word, but indicates that it's plural, so "mathematic" gets abbreviated as "math", and the "s" is added for the plural just like in "mathematics". Again, if you would talk about several gyms, you couldn't just cut off the "s" either.
No, we wouldn't.
We don't say "physic" because we don't say "mathematic".
There's no reason to shorten the word physics.
We shorten mathematics to math. No reason to keep the "s". You shorten words with a cleaver, whacking off the end, not a scalpel, taking out only what you don't want. Do you shorten the word gasoline to "gase"?
Why don't yo ...[text shortened]... "? The apostrophe would indicate letters taken out, just like in contractions.

Anyway, this was almost twenty years ago, and I have forgotten most of it. I haven't done much mathematical stuff since then. I would still be interested, but don't really have the time for it at the moment.
And then there is a study plan I have on mind. Just out of curiosity. how far are you in higher maths? And would you like (given the time of course) to deepen your knowledge of it?

Originally posted by adam warlockThanks. 🙂 I might have a look once it's up and running. I fear that the focus would be too much on physick or applied maths for my taste, but who knows? I'd really like to get more into mathematical logic some day. I once tried that at university, but it didn't work out due to a job in an orchestra that made it impossible to attend regularly, and half of the time when I would have been able to attend, the students were on strike... And it was fairly advanced, so I am not sure I'd have been able to follow it anyway. Maybe reading "Gödel, Escher, Bach" will get me moving into that direction again.

And I also like pure math. During my first year of college I thought about changing to math for a long time. So I'll definitely try to make people input some contents on that. Let's just see if we can get this thing started. I think I'll harass PBE6 and the lot of good guys that usually sticks around at the puzzle section.

But using the super-dooper find player function he'll be harassed and I'll tell him that I got your permition to do it. 😛
