Hey Xan, thanks a bunch, thats a big help.
Bowmann: Read his post and YOU figure out which post is more
worthwhile, your single sentence response which is your style to
the real information given by Xan. I have the same problem with yo ...[text shortened]... imparting nothing but your own limited knowledge of the
subject.
Next time try reading links people post in response to your questions. I stole almost all of my last post from the link to wikipedia that schakuhr posted in the first reply.
Next time I won't be so helpful.

EDIT: No Capital did the first country have.

Well thanks anyway, I printed out the link, it is dense with information
and hadn't read the whole thing to get particulars.
One interesting thing about it is the date of invention being the
19th century. Interesting juxtaposition of technology two centuries
separated, using a concept from so long ago with modern updates.
My question then becomes, what reason did they have to use
that notation in the first place? I guess so they would not have
to actually draw a chessboard. There were chess stamps available
even then to be able to fairly quickly make a position, couse if you
goofed, you had to start over....

A backup for correspondance games? You could send an FEN and a standard algebraic notation move.
