Originally posted by tmetzlerYes, I agree. Nothing is more important than one's own enjoyment of the game. But surely you agree that when someone makes a thread called "a beatiful (sic) game", and shows us a game that starts with a very early Qh5, and ends shortly thereafter with a one-move blunder, that person is asking for it.
Play whatever moves you want.

Edit: I also consider it a bit of an injustice that this game has gotten more discussion than mine under the thread "whoa". Maybe I should have chosen a better name for the thread....
well, y'all gotta understand, Ouermyhte is an even more insanely violent attacker than me -- which I mean as a compliment 🙂
I wouldn't dare, but those queen moves are difficult to defend against. As a psychological matter, I simply think people aren't used to having to defend maniacal queen moves early on. Usually there's a few warm-up tactics-free book moves even for those who eschew opening theory.
Check out this trip of terror Ouermyhte put me through:
Game 696979
At a certain point, the defender who has planned a relatively quiet opening (and even stuff like the latvian gambit is quiet compared to his stuff!) has to change mental gears and realize "I need to counter-attack and make more aggressive moves RIGHT NOW or I'm going to get blown off the board." I think stuff like Qh5 requires people to start looking for aggressive moves they wouldn't normally play so early on, because they're normally a bad, overambitious idea.

I don't know how I missed that thread...(It was sandwiched near some of Mat's threads, that's probably why) -- Nice win... It's when I see those types of wins, and can take advantage of them (more often nowadays) that I can actually feel myself becoming a stronger player. --I thank the almighty Analyze Board, for that.

Originally posted by tmetzlerThanks for the compliments. I chose to title the thread "whoa", because it pretty much summed up my reaction when I discovered the win. Not so much, "Wow, what a genius am I!" but more like, "Wow, do I have a rabbit's foot up my @$$!" In a way, a win like this is as satisfying as discovering a queen sacrifice that leads to forced mate in eight moves.

2. Qh5 is a bad move, period, end of discussion. Nobody can argue with that.
However, instead of pursuing sound development and fighting for the center, overmyte's opponent makes a worse mistake than overmyte. 8...Qe7??? was the losing move. If white made a weak early queen move, then black made a disastrous early queen move. So, I would argue that overmyte's 2. Qh5 was weak, but he won because 8... Qe7 was even worse.
Rather I would give 8...h6, forcing either the exchange which leads to a queen exchange or bring back the bishop for a loss of tempo, in both cases black gets a small advantage enough to win with.

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nc3 Qg6
A line in the Caro Kann Advanced that is often played and considered pretty sound for Black. And yet it contains a queen move on the 4th move.
Edit: and of course, I missed the obvious one: the Scandinavian Defense. (1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5)

I don't think this game was that beautiful. You did beat someone who's rating was bigger than yours by quite a bit. If everyone did that we could get quite a big thread going.....
Game 757897
I just played this one.....but I played a book line...hehehe....too bad it was unrated.

Well, I didn't beat him ... but I certainly matched him blow for blow (and sacrifice for sacrifice!)
I agree completely. ALWAYS assume that your opponent is going to make the best move back at you. If you don't, you will end up in big trouble...
There are two strategies, and both are valid. One is epitomized by Steinitz - "play the board, not the man" - and the other by Lasker, who played all kinds of head games with his opponents. He was known for playing moves he felt were inferior just to mess with his opponents' heads.
Emmanuel Lasker was World Champion longer than any other player in history.
