Two different circumstances, two different laws. I'm not breaking any laws driving 70 on the Interstate because the law says I can even though the guy on the street can't. Correspondence rules allow me to use books & databases, so it's not cheating even though it would be if I were playing OTB....different circumstances.
I would also add that if somebody is against using books/databases in Correspondence then they shouldn't use them, but don't say it's wrong for everybody else when they are playing within the rules. If you don't like the rules, don't play the game.

Are you talking about driving on a highway vs driving on the street. That's 2 different things.
Who says it is cheating by using db ? I'm not.
Posted by benawI think that I'm as bored by this debate (ie it's cheating to use analysis boards, databases, books...) as most other people who've been on this site for more than 48 hours. But really, if you are going to abuse someone for bringing up the issue again, at least read the guy's posts. He was saying it wasn't cheating, but that someone he knew was saying it is, and asked for bolstering arguments.
Listen I have been in an argument with my friend, and he says that the analyze button on the red hot pawn web site is cheating.

you seem to have missed the point completely that correspondence chess is different to otb (over the board ... just in case you didn't know) and that is the key to why you do not understand

No. It's the fact he's a plonker.
The point is that cheating is being used in two different senses. It is not cheating in the "cheating your opponent sense" - as the rules clearly state you can do it. It could be cheating in the "you're only cheating yourself" (as my gran used to say) sense. However most of us take the view that the two forms of chess are complimentary and that being able to check lines of play on a board in correspondence games, and hopefully learn to spot unpromising continuations, gives a deeper feel for the positional side of the game which we can take back to over the board games.

This thread did not mention db use was cheating. The person's friend said it was cheating but not the poster himself.
